Montevideo Maru Memorial Fundraising

The Rabaul and Montevideo Maru Society's has a challenging task of raising AU$400,000 for a national memorial in the grounds of the Australian War Memorial by mid 2011. Next year will mark the 70th anniversary of the Japanese invasion of the New Guinea islands and the sinking of the hellship Montevideo Maru with the loss of over 1,000 Australian POWs and civilian internees. A hell ship was an unmarked Japanese vessel used to transport allied POWs under horrendous conditions.

The sinking of the Montevideo Maru stands as Australia's greatest-ever maritime tragedy.

Treated Nets Reduce Mosquito Bites

The PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNG-IMR) is reported as saying the rate mosquitoes are biting has been reduced by the introduction of long lasting insecticide treated sleeping nets. Section Head of the Malaria Control Program Evaluation at PNG-IMR, Dr Manuel Hetzel said that districts and villages throughout the country, they researched, showed significant reduction in mosquito bites and transmissions of malaria.

Young Salute

Family and friends of 11 World War II airmen missing in action since 1943 saluted the dead at a recent ceremony held at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, USA.

Amateur Radio Trip

There is a planned trip to visit PNG by Amateur Radio DX (long distance) operators in April to do an Islands On The Air (IOTA) broadcast. This is the 6th similar trip and they plan to be aboard the M V Barbarian on the first of April. They hope to visit Feni Island, then Nuguria Island, Green Island, Misima and after the main DXpedition is finished between April 22-25th, and then to Loloata Island between April 25-27th.

PNG, Frabelle Eye Tuna Hub

Frabelle Fishing Co. is firming up plans with investors from Papua New Guinea to expand hub operations in the South Pacific region, said a key official.

PNG supplies 10 percent of the world's supply, representing 50 percent of Pacific production.

Nautilus Minerals

The PNG Government has confirmed investment in Solwara 1. The Government has signed an agreement and exercised its option to take up a 30 per cent stake in Nautilus Minerals' Solwara 1 project in the Bismarck Sea. Nautilus will retain a 70 per cent holding in an unincorporated joint venture. The Government also has taken a 5% interest in a separate joint venture holding company to be formed with Nautilus to provide services in the form of people and equipment to the project and has made an initial deposit of US$1.8 million as part payment for that interest.

Health Minister Blames Doctors

Sasa Zibe, the PNG Health Minister, has blamed his senior administrators, departmental head Dr Clement Malau and Secretary for Personnel Management, John Kali, for the strike action by doctors.

Indonesia Donates Cannons

The Republic of Indonesia's House of Representatives has approved the gift of six cannons belonging to the Army to PNG. The cannons, valued at approx US$50,000, will be used as salute guns.

PNG LNG Pipeline

Work is set to commence on the 850 km LNG pipeline by an international consortium. LNG will be transported from the Hides gas plant by buried pipeline to the LNG plant near Port Moresby through approximately 850 km of onshore and offshore large diameter pipeline. The LNG Project is expected to deliver its first LNG shipments by late 2013 or early 2014.

Due to PNG's extreme undulating terrain, an airport is being constructed to ensure materials are delivered to the site on time. The runway will be 3.2 km long, which compares with the length of major international airports - For example Heathrow's longest runway is 3.9 km.





LNG Landowner Problems

The chairman of a landowners group at ExxonMobil's Hides 4 liquefied natural gas development says the project won't go smoothly until the multinational company gives landowners contracts.

Damage Claim Struck Out

A pilot, who spent almost 1000 days in a north Queensland jail, after being convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old girl in PNG, has had his claim for damages thrown out by the Australian court after ruling it had been filed under the wrong legislation. He was also ordered to pay the legal costs of the government in relation to the claim.

Simberi Gold Mine

Australia-based Allied Gold has said it would likely resume production at its Simberi gold mine by the end of the week, after the government halted the operation due to problems with tailings. Allied aims to spend AU$32-million to raise Simberi's production to 100 000 oz/y of the yellow metal

Transport Joint Venture

Airlines PNG and JDA Wokman Limited have joined forces and created a strategic alliance to cater for the influx of workers into PNG's booming resources sector.

JDA Wokman has been operating in the country since 1991. Airlines PNG is a regional airline based in Port Moresby and is the pre-eminent air charter operator in PNG.





Sugar Pricing

Is it true that Ramu Sugar has been enjoying the benefits of a 70 per cent import tariff since they started operations in 1981 and only recently the duty has been reduced to 40 per cent?

Sugar cane cultivation on a commercial plantation in PNG started in the late 1970s.





Air Niugini

The National Carrier has again increased its fleet with the addition of another Q400 aircraft. This has boosted the national airline's fleet to 21 aircraft. The plane will be utilised mainly on the domestic network. In the near future Air Niugini expects to be able to replace its existing Boeing B757 aircraft with a third Boeing B767 aircraft.





Karkar Island

After four years of operations a resident of remote Karkar Island has had life changing surgery thanks to Moira Kelly's Children First Foundation.

Fortunately for the patient an orthopaedic surgeon from Cabrini Hospital in Australia visited Madang in 2007 and diagnosed him with Blount's Disease and was able to offer a solution to the problem.
