News Items

APNG Crash

An Airlines PNG Dash 8 has crashed close to Madang while flying from Lae to Madang on the 13th of October. Initial reports state that of the 32 people on board there were 4 survivors. Madang residents say there was a violent storm in the area at the time of the crash. One of the survivors, Captain Bill Spencer, has had in excess of 45 years flying experience including 35 years in PNG. The airline has grounded its Dash 8 fleet.

Rescue efforts to retrieve the bodies of the dead were hampered when an earthquake, which measured 6.7 magnitude, rocked PNG. The PNG government has announced that the planned merger between the national carrier, Air Niugini, and the privately owned Airlines PNG would be put on hold.

The Dash 8 is a series of twin-engined aircraft initially manufactured by De Havilland Canada in 1984 and now made by Bombardier Aerospace.





Buk Bilong Pikinini

The Sidney Meyer Foundation of Australia has donated a grant of A$30,000 towards the Buk Bilong Pikinini Library at the Hohola Red Cross Special Education Centre in the National Capital District. The grant from the foundation comes under its "Beyond Australia Programme" to promote the values of respect and dignity in respective societies and to highlight the multi-faceted connections between Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Prisoners Paroled

A number of prisoners have been released on parole. The parole board has approved the release of 37 prisoners on parole from six provincial jails. 18 of those released were from Bomana Jail just outside Port Moresby.





Railways

There have been railways in PNG over the years but all have been used to transport freight from one point to another. Some have been very short going from the end of the pier to wharf side transport.

Livuan Police Station

Rabaul Bridgestone has donated 4 tyres to the vehicle used by the Livuan Police Station in the Gazelle district of East New Britain province. Bridgestone donated the new tyres through its community service programme.





PNG Law Society

The Electoral Commission's returning officer has declared the results for the PNG Law Society elections, on the 30th of September 2011. The president for the fifth year in a row is Kerenga Kua.

Sugar Shortage

Parts of the highlands region are facing a shortage of sugar. Ramu sugar has blames the shortage on the worsening condition of the Highlands Highway and the increase in crime with the worst section of the road being between Goroka and Mount Hagen.

Montevideo Maru

PNG has donated $100,000 towards the costs of a memorial for the Montevideo Maru, a ship sunk during WWII. Construction of the memorial in the grounds of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra will now proceed as planned, with the dedication set for the first of July 2012 to mark the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Japanese transport ship. The sinking has been called Australia's worst ever maritime disaster.

A total of 1,053 Australians, secured in the holds of the ship, were killed when it sank.

Exercise Olgeta Warrior

PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) and Australian soldiers have recently taken part in the annual bilateral defence exercise. The exercise titled Olgeta Warrior has been running since 2009. As part of the exercise, approximately 300 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel travel to PNG to take part in infantry, logistics, engineering and aviation training. The Exercise also contributes to the PNGDF's strong performance alongside the ADF in the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

Protocol Blunder

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Danny Philip, recently visited PNG on an official visit and was kept waiting, on his aircraft, while the PNG welcoming party got its act together. The Solomon Islands PM was slightly amused at his neighbour's unpreparedness.

Telefomin Air Charter Service

From the 6th July 2011 a joint venture between North Coast Aviation and the Sandaun Provincial Government has been operating under the name of Telefomin District Air Charter Service. The agreement will see a total of 156 flights (or 13 flights a month) flying a return service between Telefomin headquarters and Vanimo.

30kg Marijuana Haul

Police have caught a man attempting to smuggle 30Kg of marijuana into the National Capital from Baguidu in Central province. Police have stated the dried-marijuana could fetch K30,000 on the streets of Port Moresby.

Kerema MP, Titus Pitom Bombom, has given 18 new computers to schools in East Kerema and Tauri-Lakekamu local level government areas while recently celebrating International Teachers Day at Moveave Primary School.

Solomon Airlines

After approval by the PNG Civil Aviation Authority Solomon Airlines have been allowed to commence scheduled flights of the newly acquired Airbus between the two countries. The airline will fly to PNG on Mondays and return on Tuesdays after overnighting in Port Moresby.
