Hiri Moale Delayed
The Hiri Moale Festival, usually scheduled to be around the Independence Day celebrations, has been delayed. Prince Charles visiting in November as part of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and that is around the date the Festival has been rescheduled to. The Hiri Moale festival has been quoted as being the identity of the traditional landowners and the natives of the land the city of Port Moresby is built on.

Kompaon Misses Out
Francis Kompaon has missed out on a medal in the final of the men's T46 100m at the Paralympics in London. The 26 year-old finished seventh in the final in a time of 12.28 seconds - more than a second slower than the personal best time he ran in the heats.

A documentary on a rainforest community in PNG by New Zealand film-maker Dr Paul Wolffram has been given the Jean Rouch prize for Stori Tumbuna: Ancestors Tales, which is about the Lak people.

Chinese Nationals Arrested
23 Chinese nationals have been arrested in the Eastern Highlands by the Immigration Task Force. They include six women. The youngest is an 18 year old who entered PNG on a student visa but was found working.

Opposition leader Belden Namah says the recent early adjournment of parliament is an attempt to gag the opposition especially at a time when there are issues of importance that need to be addressed immediately.

Adventists Baptised
Between 4,500 and 5,000 Adventists have been baptized at an evangelistic campaign in PNG. The crowd was so large they couldn't all fit in Port Moresby's Sir John Guise Stadium, venue of the 1991 South Pacific Games. Fortunately, the public address system was so powerful that many thousands were able to listen while sitting in their cars or standing outside.

Earhart Mystery
Every now and again the search for Amelia Earhart's lost plane returns to PNG and the David Billings theory. Mr Billings bases his claims on the finding of a non-military aircraft wreck by a group of Australian soldiers during the Second World War.

Processing Agreement Signed
Australia and Papua New Guinea have signed a deal to reopen the asylum seeker processing centre on Manus Island. Peter O'Neill and the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, signed a memorandum of understanding on the sidelines of the APEC meeting in Russia. Prime Minister O'Neill has welcomed the signing of the agreement.

The PNG Teachers' Association National General Secretary Ugwalubu Mowana said that teachers are the back bone of the country to develop the human resource and the government must look seriously into the teachers' issues nationwide.

State Owned Public Enterprises
Public Enterprises and State Investments Minister Ben Micah has announced he is looking overseas see if the PNG Government could adopt their standards and structures to help the State Owned Public Enterprises. The Minister said he would be looking at the way Singapore manages its state-owned enterprises and investments as a possible role model for Papua New Guinea.

PNG Fire Services
PNG Fire Services has signed an agreement with Telikom PNG to provide reliable and high speed internet via its fibre-optic link to help facilitate the Computer Aided Dispatch System. The system will record all emergency calls and dispatch to the relevant fire station.
Anglican Mothers Union
Members of the Anglican Mothers Union will attend a conference in West New Britain from the 23rd to the 30th of September. The conference will highlight and educate women on controversial issues such as violence against women and parenting.
Gun Runner Nabbed
The National Criminal Intelligent Unit (NCIU) has arrested a 38 year-old Indonesian man suspected of being involved in the smuggling of firearms and ammunition into PNG. The suspect was arrested following a tip off from police NCIU where Border Security (Customs) officials and police confiscated the weapons. Lae Metropolitan Police Superintendent Nema Mondia has confirmed the arrest.

37th Independence Day
People around the country are celebrating 37 years of Independence. The Goroka show has more than 110 traditional singsing groups performing at the National Sports Institute. However, the students of Roku primary school in central province have not had water for 37 years. The school was established in 1975 and is not very far from the Nation's Capital. The school survives on rain water and the head teacher purchases water tankered in from Port Moresby by Eda Ranu.

Boxing Title
Approved title fights for vacant international bantam weight and Asia Pacific light welter weight has been scheduled for Port Moresby on the 18th of November. The fights have been sanctioned by the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF). The main bout will feature PNG's Manus raw breed Jason Hayeu taking on Filipino Dado Cabintoy in the WPBF bantamweight title. The support event will feature PNG's Douglas Walo against Filipino's Jonel Gandapan in the WPBF Asia Pacific light welter weight title. Both PNG boxers are well into their preparations for the fights.
Anaesthetists Help PNG
Australasian anaesthetics have provided 93 simple oxygen monitors to hospitals in the country. The equipment will help ensure safe anaesthesia and save the lives of thousands of patients undergoing surgery. The monitors, known as pulse oximeters, were donated by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) at the PNG Medical Symposium and will be distributed to 40 hospitals to help raise the standard of care provided to patients.

Art-Pacific.com and the Postal History Foundation in Tucson, AZ USA are hosting an exhibit of stamps, artefacts and associated prints and materials from both sides of the island of New Guinea from the collections of Ron Perry. Southern Highlands Landslide
Over 200,000 people have been affected by heavy rain in the Southern Highlands. An elementary school boy and two girls between the ages of 10 and 16 were buried alive when a huge landmass gave way and covered them at Wara Boom in the lower Mendi area recently. Their bodies are yet to be recovered from the site while relatives had conducted funeral wakes.

Adrian Lam will take charge of the PNG Prime Ministers' XIII match against the Australian Prime Ministers' XIII, coached by Mel Menininga, at the PNG Rugby League Oval. The squad will be announced this coming week.
