New Aussie Envoy
The Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr, has announced a replacement for Ian Kemish as the Australian High Commissioner to PNG. Deborah Stokes, a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will take over from Mr Kemish in March this year. Ms Stokes has previously served as Australia's ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the United Nations in Vienna, and as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

New PX Head
Simon Foo has been appointed as the acting chief executive officer of the national airline. Mr Foo was a former Air Niugini executive and board member. The existing CEO, Wasantha Kumarasiri, has been appointed by the O'Neill government to head the Independent Public Business Corporation (IPBC), which oversees the operations of all state-owned business entities.

Registrar Re-appointed
Ian Augerea has been re-appointed as the registrar of the Supreme and National Court. He has been re-appointed for another three years from the first of February. The Judicial and Legal Services Commission also re-appointed Justice Elenas Batari, from Hoskins, West New Britain Province, for another term as a judge. It also appointed senior and distinguished private legal practitioner, Mr Goodwin Poole for a 12 months period as a judge of the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea.

The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neil has celebrated his 48th birthday. He received congratulatory messages from the Opposition Leader, Belden Namah and other politicians, leaders, staff and citizens as he celebrated his birthday on the 1th of February.

More Prisoners Escape
Prisoners escaping from jail in PNG is a common occurrence. Recently 35 high-risk prisoners were able to escape from Jomba jail in Madang by using a hacksaw to cut through the prison windows.

Court of Disputed Returns
The Special National Court of Disputed Returns in Kokopo has dismissed the election petition case against Deputy Prime Minister Grand Chief Leo Dion, citing incompetency. The election petition was filed in September 2012 by Kivu Lawyers representing Sir John Kaputin who was runner-up of the East New Britain Regional Seat in the General Elections, now held by Grand Chief Dion.

School Project Fee
The Prime minister has confirmed the limit set by the National Executive Council for school project fees has been set at K200. Mr O'Neill issued a strong warning to all provincial education boards as well as school boards and managements that Cabinet has made it an offence if they do not comply with this decision.

Airport Certification
James Kaputin from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has said that there are only eight national airports out of 22 major airports in the country certified by CASA under the national airports certification to operate for this year and accept regular passenger transport flights.

Stow-away Convicted
A man who stowed-away on an Ok Tedi Mining Ltd charter flight has been sentenced to a jai; term by the Tabubil District Court. The 32 year old stow=away boarded the OTML flight from Tari, to Tabubil in Western Province and was only detected when he appeared confused on arrival at Tabubil. When staff at Tabubil airport investigated they found he was a stow-away.
Deportation Queried
Belden Namah has taken the government to task over the sudden granting of citizenship and deportation of prominent foreign experts who have contributed to the development of Papua New Guinea. Mr Namah mentioned examples in the likes of lawyer Greg Sheppard, threatened to be deported on many occasions, barring of Ross Garnaut from coming into the country and the recent incident on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Technology Dr Albert Schram.

Defence Upgrade
After many years of neglect the government has announced plans to increase the size of the defence force fivefold. Currently the force has approx. 1,900 members and this will be increased to 10,000.
