UniTech Boycott
Students at the University of Technology in Lae (UniTech) have boycotted lectures over the deportation of Vice Chancellor Dr Albert Schram. There are long-standing claims Dr Schram falsified his qualifications to gain employment with the University, claims he denies.

More UniTech Charges
Another former staff member has been charged with conspiracy to defraud the university and state. This brings the total number of people charged to four. Former Unitech Vice-Chancellor, Misty Baloiloi, 57, from Salamo village, Esa'ala in Milne Bay was arrested and charged by Lae Police.

Air Niugini Suspends Flights
Due to damage to the Buluma Bridge that connects Hoskins to Kimbe Air Niugini had to suspend air services to Hoskins airport recently. Services have since been restored as work is carried out on the bridge. The airline said the decision to resume operations was made after workers from the New Britain Palm Oil repaired the road and bridge leading to the airport. Another bridge at Dagi was also affected by high flood water.

PNG Casino
Prime Minister O'Neill has ruled out a casino in Port Moresby. The comment comes after the chair of a landowner company in the Southern Highlands, which has received millions of dollars in royalties from the Gobe oil project, said he wanted a casino up and running as soon as possible.

Jiwaka Floods
Around 4,000 people including the Milep Lutheran High School and Norba Health Centre were cut off from the rest of Jiwaka last weekend after four bridges were washed away by floods.

Student Killed
Titus Philemon, the Milne Bay Governor has accused the police for the recent death of a student in the province. Witnesses say police mistook college student Dickson Parou for a criminal and shot him at close range.

Falcon Jet
The Falcon jet, previously operated by Air Niugini on behalf of the government, has been for sale for a long time. Although Air Niugini has received several enquiries for private jet charters the charter opportunities have had to be declined due to the jet being in storage in Singapore. Due to the high storage costs the jet will be returned to PNG.

Ageing Workforce
Former health minister Jamie Maxton Graham told parliament in 2012 that "If we do not do anything about our ageing workforce quickly, the health system may collapse". Despite this warning PNG's health staffing levels are comparable to the world's poorest countries due to a rapidly retiring force and lack of qualified replacements.

The Madang Game Fishing club is gearing to host PNG's Game Fishing Association's 38th National Game Fishing Titles 2013. The Titles will be held from the 22nd March - 1st April 2013.

Condoms in Prison
A recently released study calls for condoms to be made more widely available in prisons. Although condoms are one of the government's key HIV prevention tools, there is no official policy in place regarding prisons, with many viewing their distribution as supporting male-to-male sex which is illegal in PNG.

Cervical Cancer
Rates of cervical cancer in PNG are among the highest in the world. The leader of a cervical cancer screening and treatment trial in Papua New Guinea says researchers believe they will have sufficient data within the next few months to make the drafting of definitive policy possible. The head of science at PNG's Institute of Medical Research, Andrew Vallely, says cervical cancer kills 1,500 women a year, more than any other cancer, a rate among the highest in the world.
