Coast Watchers Farewelled
Matt Foley, one of the last World War II coast watchers recently passed away in the Gold Coast hospital in Australia. Sgt Mathew Bernard Foley of the 2nd/22nd Battalion was a coast watcher signaller in a small party positioned in the Baining Mountains overlooking the Japanese base at Rabaul.

Port Moresby Port
As the government has made a decision to redevelop the existing Port Moresby waterfront into a commercial recreation area, to be completed before 2018 the existing port will need to be relocated. Public Enterprise Minister Ben Micah has confirmed the proposed move. The port facility will be moved to the other side of the harbour but the precise location and costs are not yet known.
Army Pilot Buried
The remains of an Army pilot from Mount Prospect who died in a crash in PNG during World War II have been positively identified and was buried with full military honours in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday the third of April.

The nation's National Executive Council - PNG's cabinet-like body - has endorsed the Family Protection Bill 2013, which will make domestic violence a criminal offence and strengthen protection orders.

Phone Charging by the Sun
The World Bank Group is working with mobile phone company, Digicel, to enable solar powered mobile phone charging and street lighting to 500 villages in Papua New Guinea. Digicel says it is happy to help provide solar charging stations that will be life changing for remote communities, businesses and farmers.
An Australian expatriate has pleaded guilty to trying to illegally export components used in the manufacture of ammunition into PNG.
A restructure of State holdings will see Petromin dismantled. The CEO of Petromin has resigned of his own accord and staff of Petromin will be deployed to new entities. Petromin's mining and mineral exploration assets would go to a new State-owned entity, Kumul Minerals, while its petroleum assets would go to a separate but similarly named Kumul Petroleum.

Australian rugby league legend Mal Meninga has begun training PNG's national rugby league team. Meninga signed on last month to become the Kumuls' high performance director for the next five years

Laga Industries - manufacturers of ice cream and beverage products - has donated gift bags of Laga products to the nurses and doctors on duty at the children's outpatient department. Rotarians Rebuild Sariri
Residents of Sariri in PNG and members from Rotary clubs Warrnambool Daybreak, Geelong and Geelong East in Australia have built wooden houses and will build a school in May when Warrnambool Daybreak members visit the region.
More Sorcery Violence
The National -- http://www.thenational.com.pg -- reports that six women and a man accused of sorcery were tortured and burnt as Easter sacrifices to eradicate the practice in Merep village in Nipa district, Southern Highlands. The claims could not be corroborated with Mendi police.
Anti Venom Trials
Upcoming clinical trials for anti-venom for the deadly Papuan Taipan. In some parts of PNG, the deadly Papuan Taipan has a mortality rate several times higher than malaria, tuberculosis and pneumonia.
An accident along the Highlands Highway at Murip village in the Baiyer district of Western Highlands over Easter has seen the death of 25 people (seventeen men, seven women and a five year-old girl) after a 25-seater PMV coaster bus ran off the road and rolled down a steep cliff and crashed into rocks at the foot of the cliff..

Corporate Charter Terminal
Air Niugini now has a Corporate Charter terminal at Jackson's airport in Port Moresby. The building was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O'Neill yesterday evening. This terminal will specifically serve the airline's corporate charter clients. The new terminal is spacious and convenient. It provides all basic terminal functions and facilities with direct access to the airside for boarding. Clients can sit back and relax in the comfort of the spacious lounge whilst waiting for their flights. There are four check-in counters and two boarding counters. ANG is in the process of installing Self Service Check-in kiosks where passengers have the option of checking in themselves for flights with their luggage online and be able to obtain a boarding pass.
