PM Orders Police Out
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has ordered the withdrawal of a police mobile squad unit after the death of a young man in Manus over the weekend. The Prime Minister in his capacity as Police Minister also instructed the Police Commissioner to replace the police mobile unit and discipline those involved.

Air Niugini ATR's
Farnair Switzerland has dry-leased two freighters - an ATR 42-300(F), P2-PXY (c/n 87), and an ATR 72-200(F), P2-PXZ (c/n 198) - to partner Air Niugini. P2-PXY was previously wet-leased to the carrier but has now been transferred to the country's register.

First Constitution Reading Passed

Drugs Found

Police Assaulted
Police officers at Margarima station, in Komo-Margarima district, Hela, were assaulted by a group of drunkards while leaving for an election briefing in Tari. The drunkards, headed by a senior public servant and an LLG presidential candidate, almost knifed an officer who had to be quickly rescued by fellow officers and community leaders at the scene.

Remembrance Day Forgotten
PNG Remembrance Day was forgotten in the second biggest city in the country. Residents of Lae were disappointment over the non-staging of any event to commemorate Remembrance Day on the 23rd of July. Residents that turned up at the Lae War Cemetery found a deserted cemetery.
Kapris Shot Dead
Bank robber William Kapris has been killed in a shoot-out with police, ending a nearly three-month man-hunt. Kapris and his accomplice Raphael Walimini were shot and killed on Monday evening along the Hiritano Highway at Camp 48 between Gabadi village and Doa Plantation near Bereina government station, about 45km outside of Port Moresby.

Male Circumcision in PNG
A significant number of men in PNG are prepared to be circumcised once they learn that this can reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS, opening the door to future interventions, say experts.

State of Origin
A man is dead after two groups fought over the result of the Australian State of Origin Rugby League match between Queensland and New South Wales. Several properties were also burnt to the ground following a fight at the Bumbu settlement in Lae, Morobe province. Eyewitnesses said both parties were under the influence of alcohol.

Processing Centre 2 Years Away
Manus Island MP Ronnie Knight says he believes that it will take about two years to build a permanent facility on Manus. Mr Knight doubts Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's claim that approved refugees will eventually be settled in PNG.

Settlement to be Bulldozed
The ATS settlement, opposite Jackson's airport in Port Moresby, has been identified as a potential new site where genuine asylum seekers would be resettled in PNG. An estimated 3000 - 4000 people live on the site and may face eviction from their homes. The site is near the PNGDF's Air Transport Wing.

Asylum Seekers
People attempting to seek asylum in Australia will now face being flown directly to Papua New Guinea within hours of arrival at Christmas Island. An option being considered for asylum seekers is to establish a large centre alongside Port Moresby's international airport in addition to the detention centre on Manus Island that can hold 300 people.
