Pini to Swim Again
Ryan Pini is getting back in the pool in an effort to compete at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby. The 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist took a break after last year's London Olympics and has stepped into the coaching ranks, assisting the next wave of PNG swimmers at this month's World Champs in Barcelona.
Pioneer Aviator Dies
Pioneering PNG aviator Laurie Crowley dies at 93. Laurie Crowley (1920-2013) arrived in Papua New Guinea in 1948 and during the next 20 years made an indelible mark on civil aviation, from the establishment of a solitary Tiger Moth operation in Lae through to becoming one of the biggest light-aircraft charter operators in the then Territory.
Air Niugini - New Zealand
Air Niugini has announced that it will soon introduce new flights to Fiji and Auckland. The announcement from board chairman, Garth McIllwain came just after Air Niugini made its maiden flight to the Indonesian resort island of Bali.
Air Niugini - Bali
The first ever Air Niugini flight has landed at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) recently. The national airline now offers a weekly direct flight from Port Moresby to Bali. Chief Executive Officer of Air Niugini, Simon Foo said he was proud with the first flight from PNG to Bali. The inclusion of the Denpasar route now brings the total number of international destinations that Air Niugini flies to 11.

Madang Boat Disaster
Three women, a man and a coffin containing a dead body are missing in a boating disaster reported in Madang province. The incident was brought to the attention of staff at the Madang Provincial Disaster office. The office itself was revealed to be a disaster as it lacked a boat and life jackets and readily available funds for an immediate search and rescue operation. Eleven people managed to swim to shore and alerted authorities.

FNPF Withdraws Bemobile Support
Bemobile Mobile Phone Company chairman, Syd Yates, has said the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) had withdrawn from its proposed investment in Bemobile. As a result, Vodafone Fiji would not be contracted to provide management services.

Helicopter Pilot Robbed
The pilot and crew member of a Bell 407 helicopter belonging to Heli Solutions has been held up and robbed by a gang of thugs in the Kagua district of the Southern Highlands. Heli Solutions was engaged by the Electoral Commission to transport election officials and materials during the local level government elections in the highlands provinces.
NZ Chancery Reopened
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has officially re-opened the PNG High Commission chancery in New Zealand. The chancery was closed for renovations for the past two years while significant work including strengthening for resistance to earthquakes were undertaken.
Asian Development Bank economists Aaron Batten and Dominic Mellor say continues to operate inefficient government monopolies in aviation, power, ports, telecommunications, postal and water services.
BPNG Taken to Court
The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) and regulator of the superannuation industry has been taken to court on allegations that it had acted in bad faith and did not properly exercise its powers under the Superannuation General Provisions Act.
The residents of the town of Goroka had to do without water for at least three days recently while the Goroka Town Authority cleaned accumulated debris from the dam and pipes. The water shortage in Goroka town affected hotels, residents, shops, food outlets, the University of Goroka, PNG Institute of Medical Research, National Sports Institute, Goroka Base Hospital and other institutions.
PNGDF to Grow
According to PNG Defence Force chief of personnel Col Mark Goina the force will be increased to 5,000 members from an existing number of 2,538 personnel by 2017
Born and raised in the PNG capital, the Apisah Sisters, Violet, 13, and Patricia Apisah, 11 emigrated with mum Maria and father Patrick, a tennis coach, six years ago and are now quickly making their name on the Australian Junior circuit.
Victims Receive Compo
Victims of police brutality at Watarais in the Markham district, Morobe, have been awarded more than K850,000 in damages by the National Court. A spokesman for the victims, Soni Maraba, said they appreciated the court's decision but were not satisfied with the K500 per person payment, which excluded another 500 claimants.
Bilateral Ties with Turkey
The PNG government looks forward to establishing strong bilateral ties with the Republic of Turkey. Governor General Sir Michael Ogio stated this recently during the swearing-in of Reha Keskintepe as Ambassador Designate of the Republic Of Turkey to Papua New Guinea on behalf of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the government and people of Papua New Guinea.
Goroka Uni Dismisses Claims
The acting vice chancellor at the University of Goroka says media reports that up to 400 students have been excluded from the institution are wrong.
The President of Bougainville has accused the Papua New Guinea national government of trying to fragment the region in the lead up to the independence referendum. John Momis says the Bougainville members in the national Parliament are useless and don't push Bougainville's interests.
Miners at Risk
Thousands of alluvial miners in the Bulolo district are putting their lives at risk by handling mercury without any protection. Efforts by the Mineral Resource Authority to conduct training for locals have been ignored by most people involved in this small-scale mining activity.
Brawl Blocks Roads
A drunken brawl at the University of PNG in Port Moresby at the weekend ended in an ethnic clash between two groups from Simbu and Enga. Acting metropolitan police commander, Godwin Dukaduka, says the situation at the university remains tense and his staff are patrolling the area.
