Power Cuts
Despite higher electricity bills power consumers have been warned to expect more power cuts this year. PNG Power Limited, the country’s sole electricity supplier, sounded the warning after it imposed a 5.9% increase in tariff on electricity users from the first of January.

Swamp Ghost
A journalist investigates the controversy over the "Swamp Ghost," a B-17E Flying Fortress World War II bomber. The Flying Fortress ran out of fuel on an ill-fated bombing mission in early 1942 and was ditched in a Swamp.
The name Swamp Ghost was coined when Australian troops "rediscovered" the plane on manoeuvres 35 years ago.

Smoking Rank
PNG has been ranked as the fifth highest smoking nation out of 187 countries with over 50 percent of the population classed as smokers. According to American research the highest is East Timor with 61.1 per cent, Indonesia with 57 per cent, Kiribati with 54.4 per cent, and Armenia with 51.7 per cent.

ELK-Antelope Project
The Government will be meeting with InterOil and Total SA to set a time-line in fast tracking the LNG project in Gulf Province. Minister for Petroleum and Energy William Duma said the ELK-Antelope project has been delayed for more than four years and since InterOil has selected an operator in Total SA, the Government expects the project developed quickly.

Betel Nut Ban
Powes Parkop, the National Capital Governor, has received death threats over the ban of betel nut sales in Port Moresby. Police have tightened security for the Governor and his family following the threats. Mr Parkop says he won't be deterred from implementing the ban.

Moresby Rains
The first rain of the year has hit Port Moresby and the National Weather Service (NWS) says there is more expected. Following the rain the temps and humidity have increased. NWS say this year's wet season will peak towards the end of January into the beginning of February.

Nestled in the dense jungle of the Wame River, Kapuna Hospital serves over 30,000 people in Gulf province. The hospital is trying to raise funds to buy an ultrasound.

Island for Sale
Want to buy an island in PNG? The Conflict Islands are for sale. The third-largest island in the group, Panasesa, which has a 650-metre runway, is only a leisurely four-hour flight from Sydney. The largest island, Irai, has 7000 metres of beachfront land and capacity for a 3000-metre jet runway. The islands are able to be owned by non-PNG citizens through company structures and the 21 islands are divided into nine PNG companies.
The Conflict Islands were so named after their 1886 discovery by navalsurvey ship "The Conflict".

6th PNG Games
Organisers of the 6th PNG Games have called for urgent funding to host the November event. A submission has made to the National Government for funds and organisers are hoping that financial assistance comes sooner rather than later so work can begin on the venues as soon as possible.

Warrants Discarded
Controversial arrest warrants issued against Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, and two senior government ministers have been thrown out by a district court in Port Moresby. The warrants were deemed invalid because the legislation they were based upon was repealed in 2000, principal magistrate Lawrence Kangwia ruled, according to the Post Courier. However, he said investigators were free to reapply for new ones and he refused an application to dismiss the entire complaint against the men.

Fiji Aid
PNG high commissioner to Fiji, Peter Eafeare, has been directed by the prime minister to begin negotiations with the Fiji Government to develop a framework and schedule as to how the $F37.7 million (K25 million this year, and K25 million next year) pledged by PM O'Neill will flow through to support the government and people of Fiji before and after the elections.

Wewak Port
PNG Ports will spend K1.5 million this for improvements at the Port of Wewak to handle the increasing agricultural production from the cocoa and rubber sectors. Development of the Wewak port is part of the ongoing commitment by PNG Ports to rehabilitate and upgrade infrastructure throughout its port network.
