Panguna Visit by PM

The proposed visit by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea to the Mekamui (sacred land) of Panguna should be condemned by all parties. Opposition Leader Being Gagged?

The PNG opposition leader says an attempt by the police to arrest him at the weekend was part of a plan to gag him amidst a probe into illegal payments to a law firm. Belden Namah avoided arrest when the national court awarded his lawyer a stay on an arrest order by the police commissioner Tom Kulunga, for allegedly issuing a threat to him.

Colonel Toropo Reaffirmed

Defence Minister Fabian Pok Wednesday reaffirmed the appointment of Colonel Gilbert Toropo as the Commander of the PNG Defence force following the National Executive Council decision of 14 January this year. He said he would advise Col Gilbert Toropo to issue directives to prevent soldiers from associating with politicians in order to improve the image of the force and maintain peace and stability.

Ultra-Broadband

Alcatel-Lucent and Interchange, a Vanuatu-based company, is to deliver ultra-broadband connectivity linking Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. New undersea cable system spanning more than 3000km will reduce the digital divide in the Pacific and builds on the start of commercial service on the Vanuatu-Fiji system

Sorcery Hinders Work

Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar says sorcery, blamed as a hindrance to development in East New Britain, is not unique to PNG. He said sorcery and witchcraft were practised in other countries including Australia.

EOD Iceman Saves Life

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Riemer, 354th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal technician recently saved a stab victim's life outside a hotel in PNG. "The man had been stabbed three times," Riemer explained, "once through the right tricep and twice in the inner left thigh." According to the hotel management report from the doctor, the victim would have died without Riemer's diligent actions to save his life.

Police Brutality

The failure of PNG's government to address longstanding police brutality led to further abuses against criminal suspects and others in 2013, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2014. Domestic violence and other attacks on women, including on women accused of sorcery, remain rampant. Human Rights Watch reviews human rights practices in more than 90 countries.

Betel Nut Licences

Powes Parkop, the Governor of the National Capital District says he is considering introducing licences for betel nut vendors. The Governor says he hopes to roll out a system to regulate the sale of betel nut in Port Moresby in about six months' time.
