Air Niugini
After last month's plans to cut staff numbers the national airline, Air Niugini, is now dropping plans to sack up to 250 workers.

Airlines PNG
Airlines PNG has modified its Dash 8 aircraft so pilots are unable to make the mistake that caused a fatal plane crash in Papua New Guinea three years ago. The company has acknowledged that pilot error contributed to the accident in Morobe Province but says other factors were also at play.
The report said the crash would not have happened if Transport Canada, the regulating authority for the plane's manufacturer, had adopted previous recommendations to require 'beta lockout' devices to be installed to stop accidental reversing while a plane is in flight.

PNG Acts on Illegal Fishing
The National Fisheries Authority has stepped up in its efforts to comply with the recent 'yellow card' issued by European Union to Papua New Guinea relating to illegal fishing in our waters. Recently, the authority launched its inshore patrol craft Gabut in Vanimo, West Sepik, to protect the country against illegal fishing.

Protests Begun
Protests have begun in PNG, coinciding with the opening of parliament. The protestors are calling on Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to step down over corruption allegations. Over 1000 people staged a recent protest in Port Moresby in defiance of a ban by the country's police chief.

Worst Paid Journalistic Job
Rowan Callick who answered an advert for the world's worst paid journalistic job has been recognised for his service to journalism by gaining an OBE in PNG's Queen's Birthday list. The job was information officer for the Church of England in PNG. After working 11 years in PNG he has ended up in Australia.

PNG LNG Project
ExxonMobil in May 2014 shipped the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the $19 billion Papua New Guinea LNG project ahead of schedule. Production from the first train started in April which is one of an anticipated five-phase project. Phase 2 is expected to begin in 2017 and phase 5 is projected to begin around 2024.

Soldiers Burn Houses
Soldiers have burned down nine houses and destroyed several others in Kilakila village in Port Moresby. National Capital District Police say investigations have been launched into the attack on the village.

There has been an out pouring of support for corruption fighter Sam Koim. Mr Koim former chairman of PNG's corruption busting Investigative Task Force Sweep has apparently been dismissed after his investigations got too close to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.

New Transport Minister
Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar has been sworn in as the new Transport Minister by Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio, witnessed by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill and National Alliance Party Leader Patrick Pruaitch with all other NA Party MPs. Tabar said he accepted the ministry and would do his best to maintain the transport ministry.

Gay Refugee Resettlement
The treatment of gay refugees has been condemned in a statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Melbourne-based legal advocacy organisation the Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC) presented a statement to the Human Rights Council, identifying an Australian Government policy that would see LGBTI refugees resettled in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where homosexuality is criminalised.

One of Australia's first crowd-funded scientific expeditions might have uncovered three new species of previously unidentified mammals in the Torricelli mountain range in the remote north-west of PNG.

National Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop says Port Moresby is ready to receive people from Melanesian countries for their 5th Festival of Art and Culture. "The festival is a celebration of Melanesian arts, culture and music and I am looking forward to a successful celebration," said Parkop.

Fake Harry Fools Girls

Vale Doc Neeson
Doc Neeson, the confrontational charismatic front man of Australian rock band The Angels has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 67. He was studying to become a teacher when he was drafted into the Australian army in the late 1960s. But he avoided the Vietnam War when the army became aware of his education training. He was sent to Papua New Guinea to teach the Pacific Island Regiment.
