Mask Festival

The 19th National Mask Festival has ended in Kokopo, East New Britain province. The festival was staged simultaneously in West New Britain.


PM Orders Police Out

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has ordered the withdrawal of a police mobile squad unit after the death of a young man in Manus over the weekend. The Prime Minister in his capacity as Police Minister also instructed the Police Commissioner to replace the police mobile unit and discipline those involved.


Disaster Preparedness

The PNG government has bolstered its funding for disaster preparedness, strengthening the country's National Disaster Management Centre (NDC) to better respond to crises.


Highlands Highway

The PNG Government has allocated K30 million for a feasibility study on the rerouting of sections of the Highland Highway that are affected by continuous heavy rainfall and landslides.

First Constitution Reading Passed

Parliamentarians have passed the first reading of controversial legislation on proposed amendments to the PNG constitution related to parliament. The opposition has labelled the amendments a violation of a very significant law of the constitution.

Mobile phones continue to be confiscated from people in court despite warnings to switch them off.


Drugs Found

About five kilograms of dried cannabis intended for Manus was recently discovered by security guards at the Madang Airport. The suspected culprit from East Sepik Province was escorted by Guard Dog Security officers to Jomba Police Station.

Kostas Constantinou, one of Papua New Guinea's wealthiest property developers, is bracing for tough times. He has said "There's going to be a massive oversupply of hotel rooms and apartments it will be dog-eat-dog out there."

Police Assaulted

Police officers at Margarima station, in Komo-Margarima district, Hela, were assaulted by a group of drunkards while leaving for an election briefing in Tari. The drunkards, headed by a senior public servant and an LLG presidential candidate, almost knifed an officer who had to be quickly rescued by fellow officers and community leaders at the scene.


Remembrance Day Forgotten

PNG Remembrance Day was forgotten in the second biggest city in the country. Residents of Lae were disappointment over the non-staging of any event to commemorate Remembrance Day on the 23rd of July. Residents that turned up at the Lae War Cemetery found a deserted cemetery.

Kapris Shot Dead

Bank robber William Kapris has been killed in a shoot-out with police, ending a nearly three-month man-hunt. Kapris and his accomplice Raphael Walimini were shot and killed on Monday evening along the Hiritano Highway at Camp 48 between Gabadi village and Doa Plantation near Bereina government station, about 45km outside of Port Moresby.




The Central Provincial Government has won a major victory in the National Court that may see it get about K100 million from the National Capital District Commission and the Internal Revenue Commission.


Soldier Rampage

Defence Minister Dr Fabian Pok says Papua New Guinea Defence Force soldiers who took part in last Sunday's rampage at the University of PNG's Medical Faculty will be court-martialled and dismissed.

A small team from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force quietly walked into the West New Britain Provincial Government Office recently in a calculative visit to negotiate for a space to build an Engineering Battalion base in the province.


Water for Chivasing Villagers

The people of Chivasing, Wampar local level government, in Morobe have celebrated the installation of a water pump. PNG Water Drillers opened the tap recently watched by excited villagers who had been without good quality, clean water for over 28 years.

Male Circumcision in PNG

A significant number of men in PNG are prepared to be circumcised once they learn that this can reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS, opening the door to future interventions, say experts.


State of Origin

A man is dead after two groups fought over the result of the Australian State of Origin Rugby League match between Queensland and New South Wales. Several properties were also burnt to the ground following a fight at the Bumbu settlement in Lae, Morobe province. Eyewitnesses said both parties were under the influence of alcohol.

Processing Centre 2 Years Away

Manus Island MP Ronnie Knight says he believes that it will take about two years to build a permanent facility on Manus. Mr Knight doubts Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's claim that approved refugees will eventually be settled in PNG.


Settlement to be Bulldozed

The ATS settlement, opposite Jackson's airport in Port Moresby, has been identified as a potential new site where genuine asylum seekers would be resettled in PNG. An estimated 3000 - 4000 people live on the site and may face eviction from their homes. The site is near the PNGDF's Air Transport Wing.


What about existing refugees from West Papua? --

PNG Languages

Wycliffe Associates hopes to launch up to 100 new language projects in PNG. It's the largest and most comprehensive bible translation effort in the history of the country.


A total of 836 living languages are spoken in the South Pacific island nation, representing about 12% of the world's languages.

Asylum Seekers

People attempting to seek asylum in Australia will now face being flown directly to Papua New Guinea within hours of arrival at Christmas Island. An option being considered for asylum seekers is to establish a large centre alongside Port Moresby's international airport in addition to the detention centre on Manus Island that can hold 300 people.
