Commonwealth Gold

Two PNG weight lifters have won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Scotland. Steven Kari won gold in the 93K men's event and Dika Toua won silver but was later awarded gold when the first place getter tested positive for banned drugs. Toua took part in the 53Kg women's event.


Wisil narrowly misses final appearance --

PNG placed 16th out of 71 nations attending the recent Commonwealth Games.

Intellectual Property Infringement?

Looks like the Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) do not respect the Intellectual Property rights of fellow PNG citizens. They have supposedly lifted a photographed originally published by Humans of Papua New Guinea. TPA finally relented and took the post down without even the courtesy of an apology to the owner of the photograph.

WWI Anniversary

Australia's first mass casualty event of the war came on the 14th of September 1914 when the submarine AE1 disappeared off the coast of New Britain with all 35 members of her crew.

The Transports Department led by the newly appointed Minister, Malakai Tabar, is acting to change the image of the public transport system in Port Moresby in light of the 2015 Pacific Games.

Rugby League

Two inseparable mates from PNG are proving short men still have a place in rugby league. PNG Hunters stars Garry Lo and George Benson are re-defining rugby league's search for height. Their combined height is only 3.3 metres but their weight is 200kg.

Weightlifter Faces Charges

Commonwealth Games weightlifter Toua Udia, accused of sexually assaulting a man in a Glasgow supermarket toilet, had his trial adjourned because no interpreter can be found. The court heard from a shop assistant and a security guard who both said they were sceptical about the alleged victim's accusations when he initially approached them.


Pasifika Communications

Pasifika Communications announced last night that they are expanding their business into PNG. The company produces a wide range of TV ads, documentaries, jingles and thousands of print materials to name a few.

New Betelnut Deal

The Governor of National Capital District, Powes Parkop, has signed an agreement with Askopina Limited, which will purchase betelnuts from producers in Central and Gulf provinces, and sell them to licenced vendors within the city to trade. As part of the new deal, the betelnut is husked and sold in an airtight plastic bag.


Church Demolished

The SDA Church located at Paga Point together with the shelters of the Settlers on the Reclaimed Land below Paga Hill at Paga Point have been demolished by Police, Paga Hill Development Company and Curtain Bros.


New Britain Palm Oil

Analysts view the selection of Sime Darby Bhd as the preferred bidder of Kulim (Malaysia) Bhd's equity interest in New Britain Palm Oil Ltd (NBPOL) as a good opportunity for the conglomerate to make its entry into PNG.


Teachers Threaten Strike

The PNG Teachers Association is seeking approval for a strike. Many teachers are being underpaid or not paid at all. Teachers Association general secretary, Ugwalubu Mowana, says the Teachers Service Commission agreed to implement a negotiated pay-rise, but has not followed through.


Foundation Set to Help

The We Care foundation needs land to put up a one-stop centre where the poor, disabled, marginalised and abandoned women and children can come and get help of any kind.


Soccer Academy

PNG Football Association president, David Chung, says finding suitable land in Port Moresby to build an academy is becoming a headache. Chung said deputy Prime Minister, Leo Dion, has pledged the national government's support to host the 2020 FIFA Congress in Port Moresby.


Pacific Games

With the Pacific Games Council voting to allow limited participation by Australia and New Zealand in the Pacific Games for the first time there will be interesting contests ahead.


Pacific Islands Forum

Meg Taylor, from PNG, has been announced as the next Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, making history as the first woman to be selected to hold the office. Taylor, a senior official at the World Bank, brings over 20 years of experience working in the region and internationally, including serving as PNG's ambassador to the United States, Mexico and Canada.


PNG Backstabs Fiji

PNG reneged on its commitment to support Kaliopate Tavola, the Fijian candidate, for what many consider the top regional job. After saying yes to Fiji, Solomons and Vanuatu in a show of MSG solidarity, PNG went on to put up its own candidate, Dame Meg Taylor, a former World Bank employee, for the Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum.


MPs Affairs

Three national parliamentarians have been taken to court by the husband of a woman they all allegedly had sex with. Their case went before the Waigani Family Court on the 1st of August and has been adjourned to the 8th for submission.


Regional Airline Dispute

Fiji has stopped Air Niugini from picking up Solomon Island passengers in Fiji and taking them to the Solomons. The dispute started when the Solomon Islands Civil Aviation Authority refused a request from Fiji Airways for extra flights to Honiara.

Pride of Telefomin

Telefomin District has made history in the Civil Aviation Industry by being the first in the country, to own an aircraft.


Vale Jerry Ginua

Veteran journalists and presenter Gerry Ginua has passed away at the Paradise Hospital in Port Moresby. The media fraternity in PNG has lost one of its senior journalists who have contributed immensely to the development of the country.


Sepik River Crocodile Festival

The Sepik River Crocodile Festival is a three-day event in the East Sepik Province. The festival is being held in the Ambunti District, from the 5th - 7th of August 2014.


Highland's Homeless Children

Rising numbers of homeless children in and around Mt Hagen, the biggest town in the highlands, has prompted the Catholic Church to hold a "think tank" on the issue.


Illicit Tobacco Trade

The British American Tobacco in PNG (BATPNG) says illicit tobacco trade in the country will cost the PNG Government almost K100 million (US$40 million) in 2014. It said last year the total revenue loss was K96.1 million (US$39.4 million).


Minister Seeks Injunction

PNG's Finance Minister James Marape has filed a Supreme Court application seeking a temporary injunction against any arrest move on him. This is to maintain the status quo until an appeal to review Justice Ere Kariko's decision of June 1st not to grant a stay on the warrant of arrest on Prime Minister Peter O'Neill is determined in court.
