Manus has lost one of its most senior and respected sons. Justice Mark Sevua clocked 34 years of legal and judicial services as a lawyer and a Judge. He worked for 16 years in government and private legal services and 18 years as a Senior Supreme Court Judge.
Mt Tavurvur in East New Britain has remained quiet since spectacularly erupting last Friday (29 Aug), affecting many families in Rabaul district and parts of Gazelle, the volcano stopped rumbling the next day.

The eruption of Mount Tavurvur has possibly created dangerous conditions for airlines. This event could affect millions of air travellers as flights may be re-routed or cancelled if the eruption becomes more severe.

Vale Ian Rhodes
Ian Rhodes, a retired employee of Air Niugini, has passed away peacefully at his home in Brisbane, Australia on the 24th of August. He is survived by his wife Hinano and 6 children Angela, Michelle, Ian, Shane, Dylan and Aston. Ian spent time at Air New Zealand and helped to co-found Air Rarotonga as well as working at Air Niugini and Airlines of PNG.

Water Pipe Project
Eda Ranu has started work on a 12-kilometre pipe from Waigani to supply water to villages in Central and the Liquefied Natural Gas facilities.
Police Stand Trail
Six police officers will stand trial over slashing the Achilles tendons of 74 men in an attack in Port Moresby last year.
There will be a Radio IOTA DXpedition to PNG this month. The call signs will be P29NI and P29VCX. They should be on air sometime after the 10th of September. The team will consist of Team: Derek G3KHZ, Hans SM6CVX, Eddy K5WQG and Stig Nyman.

PNG Air Service Limited has declared a formal agreement to sponsor the sixth entrant for Miss PNG South Pacific pageant, Grace Nugi. The competition will start on October where the winner for the contest will obtain the position of Miss PNG Red Cross.
PNG was hit by ICC Cricket World Cup fever this week when the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy made a historic visit to the Pacific nation.
Sustainable Development Program
PNG's prime minister has been accused of 'grossly misrepresenting' a court decision over disputed funds from the Ok Tedi mine.
The PNG Sustainable Development Program (PNG SDP) and the PNG government are involved in a bitter tussle for control of the $1.4 billion trust, which uses money from the Ok Tedi mine to fund development projects.
The PNG SDP was set up in 2002 as part of BHP's exit from the Ok Tedi mine, which caused extensive environmental damage to the Western Province.
Frieda River Project
PanAust and Highlands Pacific's Frieda River copper-gold project in Papua New Guinea is expected to cost around $1.7bn, according to the latest feasibility report by PanAust. The company claims that the project is one of the largest known undeveloped copper deposits in the world.
The Frieda River project comprises four copper-gold deposits located on the border of the Sandaun and East Sepik provinces in PNG.
The National Airline, Air Niugini, has officially launched the 'Tura fare', allowing 50,000 seats available on a 50 percent discount till September 2015.
The discovery of an almost incurable strain of tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea's capital has renewed concerns about the potential for the disease to spread to Australia.
PNG Independence Anniversary
Just as the next edition comes out Papua New Guinea will be celebrating 39 years of Independence. PNG gained peaceful independence from Australia on the 16th of September 1975. If you are in the country then there is bound to be a big celebration no matter where you are. If you are in the National Capital then the Hiri Moale Festival should also be worth a visit.
Port Moresby Orphans
A Catholic priest whose NGO provides help for orphans as well as women and children at risk in Port Moresby says it is not often openly admitted that poverty is widespread in PNG.
AFL International Cup
As mentioned in the last edition of the PNG Gossip Newsletter - the PNG MVIL Mosquitoes won the 2014 AFL International Cup held in various locations around Victoria in Australia. The final game was played on the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) against the Ireland Warriors. The game was exciting with the Mosquitoes defeating the Warriors 6.9.45 to 6.6.42 (by three points).

Maritime Sensor System
PNG Village reports the National Maritime Safety Authority has set up sensors, which use radio-aided detection and automatic weather monitors. They are based at Alotau in Milne Bay, Tuam in Morobe province and St George in New Ireland Province.
Next year the MV Ammari will pay a visit to PNG. The former Fantasea Cruises vessel will deliver life-saving medical, training and building services to isolated seas and rivers in the country.
