Noted anthropologist and philanthropist, Dr Nancy Sullivan, 57, has been killed in a one-car crash on the Taconic State Parkway in Connecticut in the United States.

Independence Day

Perth is celebrating PNG Independence day on the 16th of September at the Royal Australian Air Force Association Club from 11:30am for $25.00. More details at a later date. Contact Perth PNGAA.

PNG celebrates its 40th anniversary of independence from Australia on the 16th of September.

Games Venues Must Be Finished

Minister for Sports and National events Justin Tkatchenko says until all work is completed and all defects of the actual construction of the Pacific Games venues are complete an amount of 10 percent will be withheld.


Indonesian Awards Scholarships

Education and cultural attaché, Dr Sedercor Melatunan from the Indonesian Embassy says Indonesia has offered 12 scholarships to PNG and a female student is among the 12 recipients of a non-degree Darmasiswa Scholarship programme.


Commonwealth Games Bid

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Governor General, Michael Ogio was applauded when he said PNG should bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Rugby League

PNG Hunters to spread home games around country --

PNG's minister for public enterprise and state investment Ben Micah has said Papua New Guinea rugby league players are ready to "hunt down, kill and eat" their Australian and New Zealand counterparts.


Micah says comment about killing and eating Australian players was 'sporting banter'.

Mr Micah's comments to parliament came weeks after New Zealand weightlifter Douglas Sekone-Fraser withdrew from the Pacific Games after posting two photos on Instagram referring to locals as "cannibals".


Pirate Drowns

A pirate has drowned in Milne Bay after robbing a cargo vessel. The Post Courier reports that the recent attack involved seven armed criminals who stabbed students on board and took money and cargo, as well as stealing a smaller escort boat. While escaping the pirate dinghy was hit by strong waves and capsized.


Aussie High Commissioner Withdrawn

The Australian federal government is refusing to say why Australia's high commissioner to Papua New Guinea has made an early exit from her posting. The departure of Ms Stokes comes after months of mixed relations between PNG and its former colonial ruler.

Air Niugini Fares

The national carrier is offering cheap fares between Port Moresby and Cairns. Fares include taxes and surcharges and must be purchased before the 14th of August for travel in August 2015.


Tennis Gold

Tennis star Tere-Apisah is one of few athletes at Port Moresby 2015 to win gold in every event in which she participated - the team event, women's doubles, mixed doubles and women's singles.


Abigail teamed up with sister Marcia to secure the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games women's doubles tennis title beating their nieces Violet and Patricia Apisah.

APEC Ministerial Meeting

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill has expressed his satisfaction at the announcement of the first APEC Ministerial Meeting ever to be held in PNG.


Sinkhole Destroys Houses

A sinkhole in PNG' has destroyed 16 houses and injured two people, local media says. The Post-Courier reported the sinkhole appeared in the swampy Ambunti area of East Sepik Province and caused panic among locals.


Mining Suspended

Gold and silver mining remains suspended at the Hidden Valley mine following the death of a worker on the 18th of July joint venture partner Newcrest Mining of Australia said recently. The Hidden Valley mine has a production target of a quarter of a million ounces of gold and 2.5 million to 3.0 million ounces of silver annually.

The company's larger Lihir gold mine on Lihir Island in the Bismark Sea was shut for 36 hours in June due to a dispute over a compensation package.


Landowners Threaten LNG Project

A major liquefied natural gas project was set to be disrupted recently after angry landowners say they will enforce a threat if demands are not met. Among the list of demands, they are calling on the government to deliver the 10.6 million US dollars in outstanding business development grants for the province.


Rabaul Landowners Demand Compensation

The Towalingan Tobebe Ratagul landowners have threatened to shut down Rabaul town if their demands are not met.


University of Queensland Graduation

It is the end of a long journey for twenty women from PNG who have just graduated from The University of Queensland. The public servants, all recipients of the government-funded Australia Awards Fellowship-PNG, studied a tailored Graduate Certificate in Governance and Public Policy in the School of Political Science and International Studies.


The Australia Awards PNG are funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and provide scholarships to support development and people-to-people connections with PNG.

Police Powerless

The police in the Western Highlands province say they are powerless to stop a tribal war on the remote border with Enga province that has killed 11 people in the past month.


Gold for PNG in Half Marathon

Kupsy Bisamo (PNG) won gold in the men's half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes and 11 seconds.


Namah To Lose Post

The State Solicitor, Daniel Rolpagarea, says the election of Belden Namah as West Sepik Governor in April failed to follow proper procedures.


Bible Burned

The burning of a Bible by two self-styled preachers in Mt Hagen has generally outraged people. The two men were nearly publicly lynched by people who saw them burning the Bible. But police arrived on the scene on time to take them to the safety of the police station.

Road Accident Minimisation

The National Capital District has partnered a Japanese firm to install barriers aimed to minimise road accidents in Port Moresby.


Running Gold

Spectators who headed to the Pacific Games to see Toea Wisil and Nelson Stone run were not disappointed. Both runners won gold.


Ship Captain, Manager Arrested

A ship captain and operations manager in Rabaul, East New Britain province, have been arrested and charged with taking and sending an unseaworthy ship to sea while the vessel was under National Maritime and Safety Authority detention.


PNG's Snake Man

If bitten, a villager's only hope of survival is the expensive anti-venom that's rarely stocked in the isolated clinics. Their life saver is the "snake man" - Australian herpetologist and toxicologist, David Williams.
