Pini Ponders Olympic Swansong

33 year old Ryan Pini is considering one last Olympic hurrah in Rio. The former Commonwealth champion retired after competing in the London Games in 2012. He returned to the pool a year later to prepare for last month's Pacific Games in Port Moresby, where he won seven gold medals and was named outstanding male athlete.


Ex PX Q400 Heads for Iceland

Air Iceland is in the process of acquiring three Q400s with the first - an ex-Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) machine TF-FXI (cn 4033) - having been ferried to Europe last week. Once certification is complete, the carrier expects to deploy them into domestic service from December onwards.


PNG Boys Remain Hospitalised

Two young boys remain hospitalised in New York a month after they suffered serious injuries in a crash that killed a prominent PNG anthropologist.


PNG School of Government

The Pacific Leadership and Governance Precinct is a partnership between the Governments of PNG and Australia to build the leadership qualities and skills of PNG officials. The aim of the Precinct is to strengthen ethical behaviour, governance and build capability across the PNG public service.


Samaritan Aviation Float Planes

Samaritan Aviation has unveiled their new float plane, which will serve as an aerial ambulance in for communities in the PNG. The new aircraft doubles Samaritan aviation's current fleet, their original craft serves as the only float plane in the country


Aid Fraud Cases Revealed

The Australian foreign affairs department has revealed it investigated the misuse of Australian aid money in several countries including Papua New Guinea. In one case the head of the PNG Law and Justice secretariat gave himself and his staff an unauthorised 23 per cent pay raise worth close to AUD $577,300.


Nautilus Says Zero Waste

The seabed mining company, Nautilus Minerals, says its world first operation to mine in Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Sea will not discharge any waste into the ocean.


Import Ban Supported

The Fresh Produce Development Agency is supporting the decision made by Agriculture and Livestock Minister Tommy Tomscoll to ban the import of some agriculture products into PNG.


Vale David Marsh

David Marsh was a District Commissioner based at Popondetta from 1968. He established the Northern District Radio Station and organised the self-government celebrations.

In 1976, Marsh had a heart attack and was sent back to Sydney, where he then did contract work for the PNG government. He was invited back to Port Moresby for the 25th and 30th independence anniversaries.


PNG Pukpuks Beat Tahiti

One of the matches at the opening of the Federation Oceania Rugby Cup being held in Port Moresby has seen the PNG Pukpuks beat Tahiti campaign with a clinical 32-10 win.


PNG Football Association

Oceania Football Confederation with the backing of FIFA, is placing increased emphasis on club licensing and each of its 11 Member Associations are behind the effort to improve club football.

Disaster authorities are preparing a massive assessment exercise of the provinces which have been severely affected by frosts and drought. Oxfam and other NGOs say they are ready to assist the national disaster authorities in Port Moresby as they began planning an aid response.

The Divine Word University has celebrated its cultural day in Madang Province.


Sim Card Policy

According to the Minister for Communication and Information, Jimmy Miringtoro, a policy is being drafted to monitor sim card owners. He is urging the public to refrain from abusing mobile phones.


Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines will launch its direct service to Papua New Guinea on the 25th of October this year.

The flights will be made on Fridays and Sundays, departing Manila at 2:10 am arriving at Port Moresby's Jackson International Airport at 9:20 am. The flights departs Port Moresby at 10:10 am and arrives in Manila at 1:20 pm.


Mt Hagen Cultural Show

This August, just as they have for more than 50 years, PNG tribes gathered to compete at the Mt Hagen Cultural Show.


Ok Tedi Wall Collapse

A section of the Ok Tedi mine collapsed in June, damaging machinery and blocking an access road, but the company insists the fall has nothing to do with the shutdown of operations. Critics of the mine have blamed the PNG government for the mine's problems.


Wan Kantri

Barike Band has been engaged by Air Niugini to reproduce the video of Wan Kantri to be sung again by Kanai Pineri, with a few additional verses for the 40th Independence Day anniversary.

Wan Kantri was co-written by Donald Lessy and Kanai Pineri of Barike Band in 1992.


PM Meets Indian PM

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill has met with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.


ENB PMV Smoking Ban

Police in East New Britain have started enforcing the law against smoking in public motor vehicles (PMV's).


Domestic Abuse Hotline

Hoping to offer support and options to families in danger, a free domestic violence hotline has been launched. The toll-free line offers trauma counselling along with referrals for local support, including safe houses, law enforcement, and legal assistance.


Helicopter Exercise

The Australian Defence Force is currently conducting helicopter exercises with the PNGDF Air Transport Wing at Jackson's Airport, Port Moresby through to the 7th September 2015.


Anglican Youth Open Forum

Anglican youth have held their inaugural open forum in Port Moresby to help foster effective evangelism in their local parishes.


Court Frees Gulf Governor Kavo

A three men Supreme Court bench has quashed the conviction of Gulf Governor Havila Kavo. The high court ruled, trial judge Sir Gibbs Salika erred in fact and law when determining the case on its merit when he sentenced the Gulf leader to jail.


Baby Sold

A father who sold his two-month-old baby for K500 has told Port Moresby police that he regrets his action and wants the child back. But the couple who bought the child is refusing to give him back, saying they have already spent a lot of money on him.


Attempt to Stop Tribal War

Police in Hela province have set up camp in Tari to try and stop tribal warfare between the Erepe and Tapaya clans.


Breaking the Gender Barrier

Emergency Response auxiliary staff, Kelena Danny is breaking down the gender barrier in Emergency Response at Hidden Valley mine in PNG.


River Levels Dropping

The long drought experienced in the Highlands has resulted in a drastic drop in the level of rivers and streams, providing easy catches for fishermen.


Brutality Condemned by US

The United States Embassy in Port Moresby says Papua New Guinea police must do more to stop senseless acts of violence. The Embassy has issued a statement deploring a brutal attack on three women and one man recently in Mendi in Southern Highlands.

Manus Island residents are furious Port Moresby has taken over the police investigation into claims three Australian men gang-raped a woman, the local MP, Ron Knight, has said.


West Sepik Governor

West Sepik Governor, Amkat Mai, has been re-elected in a by-election to the post he won in the 2012 general election but lost to a court ruling.


There's tension in Vanimo with the Member for Vanimo Green River, Belden Namah, refusing to vacate the Governor's seat.
