Police Shoot Students

Several people have injured when police shot at protesting university students at the University of PNG.

Port Moresby General Hospital CEO, Mr Grant Muddle, says there have been no deaths or critical university students at the hospital. All gunshot wound casualties have been stabilised and admitted at the hospital.

Media Council Condemns Attack

The Media Council of Papua New Guinea has condemned the assault of a journalist this morning by members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).

National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) journalist Rose Amos was kicked and punched by two police officers at the scene of a confrontation this morning between protesting University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) students and the police.


O'Neill Should Talk to Students

History is repeating itself in Papua New Guinea. The reported killing of four students on Wednesday follows the death of three others at the hands of the police in similar circumstances in 2001. This latest event comes after more than a month of protests from students calling for the resignation of Peter O'Neill.


Police Fires Shots at Gerehu

Police have fired several shots at Gerehu in Port Moresby chasing people away at the main bus stop.

The All Whites' OFC Nations Cup semi-final in Port Moresby went ahead, despite police shooting student protesters in the city.

The Official Mascot of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2016 was launched and presented to the public today in front of thousands of football fans at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

Governor of Port Moresby's National Capital District (NCD), Powes Parkop, said the use of live ammunition on students was "unwarranted" and has challenged Government claims that police were provoked with stone throwing, kicking off a violent confrontation.

Unitech Returns to Normalcy

The situation at Lae University of Technology returned to normalcy after the Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr and two of his officers went on campus unarmed and engaged in dialogue with the Senior Executive Management (SEM), Student Representative Council (SRC) and the leaders of the provincial groups assuring them that the police would not enter the campus unless called for by the administration on the understanding that students refrain from destroying public property on campus.


Shootings Highlight Aid Needs

PNG and Australian officials need to make more effort in increasing joint PNG-Australian police operations and Australia needs to insist that it will coordinate the distribution of funds given through aid programs to organizations and departments that are plagued with corruption. The concept of providing funding in an effort to cease corruption cannot be successful if the funds that are provided are directly put into the hands of those that are corrupt.


Somare Visits PMGH

The founding father of PNG, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and his wife have visited the Port Moresby General Hospital bedside of a student wounded by a gunshot while recently filming events at the University of PNG (UPNG). Another UPNG student Steven Likas, is still in a comma with a bullet in his head.

Solomon Islands Students

The Solomon Islands Government is yet to decide whether to bring back students from the troubles in PNG. Solomon Islands High Commissioner to PNG Barnabas Anga said he's still waiting on UPNG, PNG University of Technology (UNITECH) and University of Goroka to inform him about their operational status for this semester.


Divine Word Online Exams

Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang will be the first University in PNG to deliver its examinations online. The online examinations coincides with the inaugural examinations for DWU's first intake of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students.


Oil Search

Oil Search Ltd., the energy producer that agreed to acquire fellow PNG explorer InterOil Corp. for $2.2 billion, is betting it can overcome a languishing liquefied natural gas market to deliver another export project by beating rivals on costs.

It has been reported the University of Papua New Guinea has obtained an injunction to stop protests after a number of people were hurt when a demonstration turned violent.


Bahai's Launch New Website

The National Spiritual Assembly of Bahai's in PNG have launched a new website. The website represents the identity of the Bahai's in PNG, and the faith in general.


The Bahá'í Faith arrived in PNG in 1954. Sr Violet Hoehnke, of Australian origin, was the first pioneer and the first to reach the shores of PNG arriving at the Admiralty Island and taught the Bahá'í Faith to a first Papua New Guinean man Apelis Mazakmat, a teacher and a respected community leader from New Ireland Province.

Exercise Koa Moana

The United States Naval Ship (USNS) Sacagawea will visit Port Moresby from June 17 to 24 as part of Exercise Koa Moana, a bilateral exchange between the U.S Marine Corps and the PNG Defence Force.


Water Desal Unit

There has been an official presentation ceremony of an Israeli-designed mobile water purification and desalination unit to the PNG government at Pangia, the birthplace of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.


Mt Hagen News

After reconciliation between the Chief Executive Officer of Mt Hagen City Authority, Leo Noki, and the city manager, Pius Pim the newly established Mt Hagen City Authority (MHCA) will be working hand in hand with the Town City Council.


NRL Expands Program in PNG

GE and the National Rugby League have announced a partnership to expand the league's wellbeing program across Papua New Guinea schools. The NRL Wellbeing program aims to help students make the connections between physical activity, nutrition and mental wellness. Nearly 20,000 primary school students from Port Moresby, East New Britain and the Eastern Highlands province will benefit from the program and increased education.


Bicycle Race

Over 200 cyclists of all age groups took part in the Pacific Industries Bicycle Race recently in East New Britain Province, despite bad weather.

A PNG student studying in Australia says the police who opened fire on a group of university students in Port Moresby should have "a good look at themselves".

Institute of National Affairs executive director Paul Barker says Port Moresby's tourism sector is benefiting more compared to other centres.
