Independence 16 September

After being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975. Elections in 1972 resulted in the formation of a ministry headed by Chief Minister Michael Somare, who pledged to lead the country to self-government and then to independence. PNG became self-governing on December 1, 1973 and achieved independence on September 16, 1975.

Samaritan Aviation

Samaritan Aviation is making a difference in the battle of the scourge of tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea. It is estimated that 25% of all TB patients in PNG are children and TB will prove to be fatal for 10% of these children.


East Sepik Cattle

Over one hundred cows have been shipped from Erap Farm in Morobe province to Maprik in the East Sepik as part of the district's cattle project. There are expectations of a further two more shipments of cows.

The home of the K19 billion PNG LNG project, Hela Province, is under siege following an upsurge in fresh inter-tribal group fighting.


APEC Tourism Group

Delegates from APEC member economies have attended the 49th Tourism Working Group meeting in Kokopo, East New Britain province. The event is one of many international meetings leading up to the 2018 APEC Summit in Port Moresby.

Over the past year, Airborne Logistics have started providing service flights to several isolated villages in Central Province, Papua New Guinea. The company has a novel way to make ends meet - by buying fruit and vegetables off the villagers and then selling their produce at market in Port Moresby, reports

Lae's Coffee Industry Corporation export control office has reported that coffee yields have increased in parts of the Morobe province.

A businessman who allegedly disappeared with K360,000 belonging to the Kagua Secondary School has appeared in the Mendi District Court charged with false pretence and misappropriation.


Rugby League Brawl

The second semi-finals of the Digicel sponsored PNG Rugby National Rugby League match at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, turned into a bloody battle between spectators and officials after the Agmark Rabaul Gurias, secured a narrow win over the Wamp Nga Mount Hagen Eagles 19-points to 12.

United Church Women's Convention

Over 2,000 women from the United Church across the country are expected to participate in their 7th Regional Convention to be held in Kerema, Gulf province.


Cruise Tourism

PNG has been encouraged to grasp the potential multimillion dollar benefits that cruise tourism could provide the country. A World Bank study said US$4.5 million was generated from the industry last year and that amount was likely to increase.


Gurney to Step Up

Gurney, the airport that serves Milne Bay and Alotau, will ensure standards at the main entry point for the province will be improved when international flights start arriving.

The Fiji-PNG Business Council believes the trade war threats from Papua New Guinea have been escalated by politicians from PNG.

PX - Federated States of Micronesia

The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia has thanked the Government of Papua New Guinea for connecting both countries through air services that will be operated by Air Niugini.


Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Simon Foo, says the establishment of this direct service from PNG to the Federated States of Micronesia represents a major expansion of Air Niugini in the Pacific and for Port Moresby to become the Pacific's hub in the aviation industry.

Village Toilet Project

Manly Rotary and District 9685 are partnering with Friends Of Rambutso Inc to run workshops for villagers on the build, use and repair of composting toilets to improve health, gender, social outcomes.

PNG is going backwards. Despite significant international funding allotted to PNG for water, sanitation and hygiene combined - through the global WASH initiative - in percentage terms fewer people in PNG today have access to sanitation than 20 years ago.

Browne Plays in Europe

David Browne, the son of cartoonist Bob Browne, has been drawing his own path in football since the day he started playing. From humble beginnings, living in the Kaugere suburb of Port Moresby, he has gone on to become the first PNG footballer to play professionally in Europe after he signed for Dutch Eredivisie team, PEC Zwolle last year.


Frangipani Festival

The volcanic town of Rabaul in the East New Britain province is gearing up for at least three days of festivity that will start on the country's independence eve. The Frangipani Festival will include the joint celebration of PNG's 41st Independence and the 22nd anniversary of the twin volcanic eruption of Tavurvur and Vulcan.
