News Items
Independent Newspaper
The Independent Newspaper is going to close after 23 years of providing a
weekly news service to the people of PNG. The last edition rolled of the presses
yesterday (5th July 2003). The Independent newspaper has been operating under
its current name since May 27, 1995, after changing from its founding name
of The Times of PNG.
Southern Highlands
The newly elected parliamentary members for the Southern Highlands Province
have been sworn in at a Parliament State Function recently. All members except
for the disputed Imbonggu Open seat.
Lae Railway
According to the Minister for Works a proposed railway from Jayapura in Indonesian
to Lae is not a high priority at the moment as the priority was to fix the
many deteriorating roads around the country. The railway was proposed at a
resolution of the Mamose regional governors conference in 2001.
Central Province Show
Central Province will once again hold their agricultural show at the Sir
Hubert Murray Stadium on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June. This was the long weekend
that the Port Moresby Show was held until vandalism at the Moitaka Showgrounds
proved too expensive for the show committee to rectify every year.
Kwikila Rice
The Secondary School at Kwikila in the Central Province is one of the oldest
schools in the country. The school is embarking on an agri-business scheme
to grow rice with assistance from the experts at the Pacific Adventist University.
The school is also attempting to move into the computer age. It has asked
the Governor of Central for help to acquire computers for the school library
so that students can access the Internet and have email.
Kavieng
Four people sheltering under a tree near the Malangan Beach Resort were struck
by lightning killing one and hospitalising the others. The lightning struck
the tree and travelled through the tree to the people and ground.
Social Welfare Dept
The Policy and Technical Division of the Department of Social Welfare and
Development lost over K100,000 in computer and other office gear in a recent
break and enter in the early hours of the morning. See also Social

Tewae-Siassi
The MP for Tewae-Siassi, Mao Zemming, has been declared to be unworthy to
continue to hold public office by a tribunal comprising of judge Timothy Hinchliffe,
senior magistrates Francis Manue and Patrick Monouluk. The tribunal said Mr.
Zemming had misused millions of Kina and therefore musty not be allowed to
continue to hold public office.
Finland
The country of Finland has raised the status of its representative in PNG
by appointing an ambassador instead of having a consulate office represent
its interest here. The government of Finland has funded several projects such
as the Kitwe disaster relief group, Tent City Primary School and the Bougainville
provincial council of women already in PNG.
Jackson's Airport
The Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry president has said that
Jackson's International Airport is a disgrace and gives new visitors to PNG
a bad impression from the outset. The recent increase in visas has not been
advised to passengers in advance. The security outside the terminal is very
lax and there is a shortage of staff at the migration counters. Even the airport
welcome sign is missing letters.
Inflation
Inflation in PNG has been measured to be 20 percent in the last 12 months
according to the National Statistics Office. It rose by almost 7 percent for
the first three months of this year.
Boomerang Aid
Senior PNG government ministers and department officers have raised concerns
that almost all of the aid that is given by Australia to PNG results in a
market for more goods from Australia. A huge imbalance of trade favouring
Australia shows a massive 66 percent imbalance. Internal Revenue Commission
figures show that PNG exports goods to the value of K769 million to Australia
and imports over K2.2 billion of goods from Australia. No figures were produced
for the trade imbalance to and from other countries that are heavily industrialised
as opposed to the type of economy PNG has.
Air Niugini
Air Niugini has announced that the new CEO of the Airline will be Rod Nelson
from Australia. This has brought out a condemnation from the chairman of the
Tourism Promotion Authority who says it is a slap in the face for qualified
PNG people who appear to have been overlooked for the job. The Trade Unions
have also come out against the appointment. Air Niugini advertised the position
from within the country and overseas and it is hoped that they chose the most
suitable person to try and turn the airline around.
Lae Police Reservist
A reservist policeman in Lae has been jailed for being in possession of Marijuana.
The reserve policeman allegedly attempted to ship a large box of marijuana
to Kimbe. He has been sentenced to two-years jail.
Minj
Workers at the Minj District Office were recently locked out of their work
place after the gates were locked for outstanding debts.
Social Welfare
The Social Welfare and Development Department has a new secretary. Joseph
Klapat has replaced Joseph Sukwianomb as the Secretary. See also Social
Welfare Department above.
Carteret Islands
Local villagers from Bougainville have donated food to the people of the
Carteret Islands. The low lying islands are battling the problems associated
with the rising sea and higher than normal tides that have washed away food
gardens. It appears that the National Disaster Office has no funds to help
the islanders. The islanders have been surviving for the last five months
on the fish that they have been able to catch.
Stetin Bay Lumber
It would seem that the Stetin Bay Lumber Company, in West New Britain province,
is now the first logging company to be able to harvest and export from reforested
plantations that were started over 25 years ago.
Madang Rural Health
The chief executive of Madang's Modilon General Hospital has said that K10,000
of a K39,000 grant by the Provincial Government for rural health has gone
missing. It is not known where the K10,000 was used and it has been suggested
that the Madang Provincial Government misappropriated it.
Western Province
Under the Yumi bridge program western province will get four bridges.
Tourism
A reader has the following comments about trying to get information about
PNG.

PNG because tourist dollars make a big impact on any county but it took 6
months for someone at PNG Tourism to respond to my request only to say that
the person who could help me is on vacation!!!!!!! I expect that I might hear
back again around Christmas.

Yes, sometimes the worst enemy of PNG tourism can be the very people who
are trying to promote it. Even when they have a cost-free opportunity they
let the opportunity go begging. These are the same people who say they have
no money to promote PNG but as the reader said she has lived in PNG and knows
the problems - what about someone who wasn't as patient? I am sure Fiji would
gladly and readily offer material.

Lae Transport
Lae City and Morobe province in general is cracking down on the issuing of
PMV licences. A new Morobe Transport Board has decided to be stricter when
issuing PMV licences. It also hopes to be able to collect a toll from buses
travelling into the highlands and also to Madang. The board are also looking
at registering sea craft that ferry passengers along the coast.
Markham Valley High
Five students from Markham Valley High School have been arrested and charged
with allegedly burning down the administration block on Tuesday morning (3
June 2003). They are being held in the Lae Rural Police Unit lockup. The school
board had an emergency meeting and has decided to suspend classes indefinitely.
Central Province School
An isolated school in Central Province has lost a double classroom building
that housed an elementary prep class and a Grade3 1 and Grade 4 class to a
deliberately lit fire. The chairman of the school allegedly burned the classroom
and equipment because he was upset with people who used his petrol without
permission. The classroom was funded and built by the villagers without any
assistance from outside the immediate area.
Tolai Warwagira & 9th Mask Festival
Don't forget that the Tolai Warwagira and 9th Mask Festival will be held
in the beautiful volcano town of Rabaul from the 9th to the 19th of July.
The Warwagira is being held from the 9th to the 15th of July, followed by
the Mask Festival from 16th to the 19th of July.
Judicial Conference
The 15th Annual South Pacific Judicial Conference will be held in Madang
from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th of June 2003.

Port Moresby Weather

PNG Boxing
If a boxer, competing in the South Pacific Games in Fiji, wins a gold medal
he is guaranteed to receive K1000. This may not seem like much money but most
of the PNG boxers are unemployed and receive no income. Eight boxers are competing
for PNG in Fiji.

Red Cross
PNG Red Cross is appealing to business houses for sponsorship of at least
five young women who are eager to take part in the annual Miss PNG Quest.
Five girls are ready to start fund raising activities but need the help of
the business houses to get and keep the ball rolling.
