PNG's largest computer networking and data communications company, DataNets, has entered into a partnership with two of the world's largest IT companies to provide business houses with better communication infrastructures. The two IT firms are CISCO Systems and NEC to enable Data Nets to use their products to meet business houses and industry partners' communication technology demands in PNG.

World War II Mystery
A handkerchief thrown overboard from the Montevideo Maru before it was sunk near Luzon in the Philippines may confirm that Australian prisoners were on board. Pressure has been placed on the Australian Federal Government to launch a search for the Montevideo Maru, similar to the hunt for the recently discovered HMAS Sydney.

Ramu Agri Industries
WR Carpenter (PNG) Limited confirmed today that it is making a counter offer for the shares in PNG's Ramu Agri Industries Limited following the publication of stock exchange notifications by Ramu recently. Chief Financial Officer, Tamzin Wardley, confirmed that Carpenter intended to make a bid and requested shareholders to wait for their formal bid before making any decisions regarding selling out to New Britain Palm Oil Limited.
Shock Death
Radio Australia has reported the shock death of Joseph Kabui, President of PNG's autonomous region of Bougainville at about 4:10am on the 7th of June 2008. Radio Australia's PNG correspondent Steve Marshall reported Joseph Kabui was elected President of Bougainville by an overwhelming majority in 2005, but his popularity had waned because of his decisions about foreign investment on the island.

Islands Business has reported that 95 percent of children of school age in Fiji, Samoa and Tonga reach grade 5 after entering school; the corresponding figures for PNG is 58 percent and for Nauru a meagre 25 percent.

New Ireland Autonomy
The island province of New Ireland in PNG's north has set up a committee in the capital Kavieng to discuss the idea of autonomy. Former prime minister Sir Julius Chan is pushing for resource-rich New Ireland province to become PNG's second autonomous region. Another mineral-rich province, Bougainville, became PNG's only autonomous region after a bloody secessionist war during the 1990s.
World War II MIA
It has been reported that Pentagon researchers are looking for the remains of more than 2,000 American pilots and crewmembers lost over PNG during World War II. The Boston Globe has reported Recovery teams - made up of some 30 active-duty US soldiers, forensic anthropologists, bomb experts and PNG labourers - are scouring the rugged PNG terrain considered to be among the most difficult in the world to search.

Gas Pipeline Test
Energy Solutions International have successfully tested a pipeline leak detection system for Oil Search Limited - PNG's largest oil and gas producer. In two tests, Oil Search received a leak warning within seconds of the pipeline valve being opened; a full alert was received within minutes. A precise location was determined within 10 minutes, to within 0.44 km for the slightly larger leak test and 0.67 km for the smaller leak test.

Lae Port Project
Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Lawrence Greenwood Jr is in PNG. During his first trip to the country he will visit Lae for the loan signing of the Lae Port Project approved by the ADB Board late last year. ADB is extending a $100 million loan for the Lae Port Development Project, which involves the construction of port facilities, including a tidal basin, a multipurpose berth and terminal works which, in turn, include buildings, storage areas, roads, drainage, water, electricity and sewerage services.
He will also launch a nationwide social marketing campaign to increase HIV/AIDS awareness and encourage the use of condoms. They have a web site located at -- http://www.adb.org

PNG Fishing
Fishermen from Milne Bay province are taking advantage of 38 recently renovated lighthouses to increase their catches. It is easier to catch fish at night and with the lighthouses to guide the fishermen they can catch and return safely to the village. Travellers are also making use of the lighthouses. Many journeys around the province take longer than available daylight.
Countrywide an Asian Development Bank (ADB), loan of US$20.6 million has helped to renovate 167 lighthouses that had fallen into disuse through vandalism, theft, and neglect during the decades following PNG's independence in September 1975.
Another ADB-supported programme, the Community Water Transport Project, backed by a US$12.85 million Special Drawing Rights soft loan, is seeking to help island communities by installing jetties to encourage workboat operators to open up routes that link these isolated villages to the provincial capitals. Without a wharf many communities are currently being bypassed by the bigger boats.

PNG Aquaculture
The PNG Sustainable Development Programme (PNGSDP) Company Board has committed K20 million (US$7.33 million) to develop PNG's Western Province Sustainable Aquaculture program. The program is expected to deliver social, subsistence and export earnings and associated business opportunities in excess of K10 million (US$3.66 million) per year within the next decade.
