News Items

K100m "lost"



Records keeping track of K100 million in public funds for the National Forest Authority (NFA) have gone missing according to the Auditor General's office. No records have been kept for the period 1999 - 2005. The Department of Finance has been blasted by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for not providing help to the NFA.

Transparency International



PNG has come in at the top of the Corruption Perceptions Index for the Pacific. It is perceived as being the most corrupt country in the region. The index further indicated that internationally, PNG is ranked among the 30 most corrupt countries in the world with no real indications of improvement in governance.

Tokyo Flights



Air Niugini has suspended its flights to Narita, Japan. Chief Executive, Wasantha Kumarasiri, said with the continuous increase in jet fuel price and its impact on all airlines in the world, Air Niugini cannot continue to provide services to and from commercially unviable routes. Air Niugini has been making significant losses on the Japan route since the resumption in 1997.




Paralympic Games



Francis Kompoan, from East New Britain, has become the first paralympian from the Pacific to win a medal at the Paralympic Games. Francis, 22, finished second behind Australian Heath Francis in the final of the T46 100 metres at the Bird's Nest Stadium. He was PNG's flag bearer at the Games' opening ceremony.

More than half a million women lose their lives annually as a result of complications from pregnancy or childbirth of which 99% of the deaths happen in developing countries.

Hiri-Moale Festival



An initial payment of K11,500 has been made to build lagatois in preparation for the coming Hiri-Moale Festival. Builders from Manumanu have received K4500 for a three-hulled lagatoi and Porebada was allocated K7000 to build a four-hulled canoe. The money was paid by the National Capital District Commission. The Hiri-Moale Festival will be held on the 25th of November this year.




Bandwidth Upgrade



Pipe Networks has cleared one of the last major hurdles in its plan to build an optic fibre network between Sydney, Guam and Papua New Guinea with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granting it landing rights in Guam. The link would provide 10Gbps on the PNG-Guam route and 10Gbps on the PNG-Australia route. The link will terminate in Madang and Telikom PNG Limited will own the cable station in Madang.

Louisiades Rally 2008



The inaugural Louisiades Rally 2008 from Australia to Misima Milne Bay province, has got underway with 26 luxury yachts setting sail from Cairns on Saturday. The Louisiades Rally is a tourism initiative aimed at promoting sustainable tourism in the remote islands off PNG by getting tourists on private yachts to visit the pristine outlying islands of the Louisiade archipelago and spend time with the local communities.

Lutheran Lights



The Lutheran Church of PNG is undertaking a major rural electrification program that will cover the country. According to the church, the project will not only light up rural communities in PNG but also promote awareness on climate change. The rural electrification project would begin in the Kol area in the Western Highlands Province.

Lock-up Escape



Five people arrested in Enga province recently have dug a hole in the concrete floor of the Wabag police cell and escaped by crawling out of it during the early hours of the morning. It is believed the escapees used an iron rod or a knife to dig the hole over a three day period.




NTS TV



The government-funded National Television Service (NTS) has been launched as an independence gift to the people of PNG. Large screens were set up in Goroka, Mt Hagen, Rabaul and Port Moresby for people to watch the new service of mostly pre-recorded programs. The first program to be screened was Yumi Yet - a documentary about Independence Day celebrations in 1975.

Smaller Provinces



With over 800+ languages it seems that PNG is heading to that number of provinces. The National Government has allocated K2.5 million in this year's supplementary budget to undergo preparations to establish a Hela Province, separate from the Southern Highlands. As it is some provinces have less than the population of Port Moresby if you are to believe the census figures from the year 2000.

Looting Culture



It has become part of the culture of people living along the Highlands Highway to loot any trucks or vehicles that gets into difficulties along the road. Recently a truck destined for the highlands overturned near the Wara Simbu bridge below the town of Kundiawa and although police attempted to guard the truck so the contents of frozen goods could be transferred to other trucks, the cargo of lamb, chicken, fish, shrimp and squid was stolen by people along the highway.

Chimbu provincial police commander Supt Joseph Tondop has been quoted as saying "every time there is a breakdown, people like to loot. Why do they want to rob and gain from somebody else's misfortune?"
