Warning: PNG web sites seem to come and go. The fact of life is that it costs money to host a web site and there is not much return on the outlay to most businesses in PNG.

If you do click on a link and use the services or even have some comments to make then please contact the people at the relevant web site and let them know so they at least know that someone has gained some value from their efforts. If you are so inclined then mention that you heard about them from this web site. -- The PNG Gossip Newsletter.

Prasada Rao, chief of the UNAIDS team for Asia and the Pacific says the AIDS pandemic in PNG is pushing the health system to near collapse. UN reports show the growth in numbers of new cases have increased exponentially, from 21 per cent in 1984-1989 to more than 99 per cent in 2008. The UN estimates there are 54,000 people living with HIV in PNG.

Blood Donors

This time of year with many regular donors on holidays the blood bank struggles to keep up with the demand for blood products. The blood bank collects 600 to 1,000 bags of blood every month, averaging 150 bags a week. The St John Blood Bank has appealed to the public to remember that it is vital to have adequate supply in stock at all times as you never know when you will need that blood to save yourself.

Matupit Islanders

Mining in PNG

The Mines Inspection division of the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) was busy last year as it tried to ensure all mining laws were followed and no employee's lives were put at risk during the operation of the mines. Last year the Ramu Nickel/Cobalt mine and Simberi mine had their operations suspended as the two operations failed to comply with laws and regulations covering the mining industry in the country. Operators in 2010 can expect the same treatment to be given without fear or favour. Failure to comply will result in the shutting down of operations costing millions of Kina until the legal and practical requirements are fully satisfied and are up to PNG standards.
