Kapris Caught
William Kapris a recent escapee from Bomana and probably one of PNG's most notorious criminals, has been recaptured by police. Kapris was captured at the Freeway Lodge in Port Moresby believed to be owned by an acquaintance of the criminal. After a long interrogation by police he is now back at Bomana jail from where he escaped about four weeks ago. It is understood he has revealed the names of high profile people who were involved with him in carrying out the crimes he was alleged to have committed.

PNG Visas
Visas for travel to PNG can be obtained for citizens of most countries on arrival at Jackson's International Airport for a maximum stay of 60 days in any 12 months, however, it is highly recommended that you obtain a visa prior to arrival. Check as visitors from some countries must get a visa before arrival.
Kokoda Track Closed
landowners from Mt Kodu along the Kokoda Track have closed down the track to show the people's frustration over the failure by the PNG and Australian governments to deliver its Kokoda Development Program (KDP). A landowner said a deal was signed between the two governments in Madang in 2008, after the landowners protested they wanted Australian-owned mining company, Frontier Resources to mine the proposed Mt Kodu mine which was supposed to be developed near the track.
Soldiers Seek Pay Rise
Around four busloads of angry soldiers have recently gathered at the PNGDF headquarters seeking answers on why they have not received a pay rise even though police have received one. The National Executive Council made a decision in 2005 to have a pay restructure for police, defence and correctional services. One of the angry soldiers said they had been waiting for almost six years.

Overseas Medical Team Visit
A team of doctors from Ballarat Base Hospital in Victoria, Australia accompanied by their PNG counterparts have arrived in Madang to treat patients with prostate blockage problems, urethral damages in women during labour and damages in the urinal passages of men brought on by accidents. The team will be in Madang for a few days before returning to Port Moresby to treat more patients before returning to Australia at the end of the month.
The doctors are in the country under an AusAID funded trip.
InterOil
Explorer InterOil has bought a second helirig for $4.5 million to speed up development of its Elk-Antelope gas field onshore in PNG. The rig is capable of drilling to 16,500 ft and of drilling longer horizontal sections than the company's first rig, thus it will provide better well design flexibility.
UniTech
The PNG University of Technology has had to delay the start of the academic year due to a serious water shortage in Lae. Orientation and registration was initially set for 15th - 19th of February but would now be deferred to the 22nd to the 26th of Feb and lectures would now begin on the 1st of March.
Moresby Buses
The Brisbane City Council has donated ten buses free of charge to the National Capital District municipal government. The NCD had to pay shipping costs. The buses can carry 40 passengers and have a lifespan of five to 10 years. Special drivers will be trained to drive the buses and proper fares and routes will be used. It is hoped the buses will help to meet the increasing demands of an ever increasing population for buses in the city.
Port Moresby had similar buses in the late seventies.

New Lawyers
Eighty-four new lawyers have been admitted to the bar at the National and Supreme Courts. They have been challenged to be good lawyers and good citizens of the country and to uphold their profession and personal life with respect and dignity.

St Johns PNG
The Governor-General, Grand Chief Sir Paulias Matane, has held a ceremony for long serving volunteers of the Order of St John at Government House. The volunteers were council members of St Johns PNG who received their medals from their president and Governor-General. Those recipients include principal chaplain, Commissioner Andrew Kalai, Sir Ramon Thurecht, Aloysius Aihi and Robin Yanopa.

Aviation Rumours
Hear that HeliFix is getting a few more helicopters in conjunction with a WA firm and Airlines PNG (APNG) hopes to finalise a deal in the next few weeks for a larger aircraft and wants to take delivery in the next six months. APNG is also in negotiations to buy at least two more second-hand de Havilland Canada Twin Otters.

Forced Evictions
Human-rights organization Amnesty International has recently launched a report detailing the illegal forced evictions which have occurred around the Porgera Gold Mine. Canadians take note: the mine is 95-percent owned and operated by subsidiaries of Toronto-based Barrick Gold, as part of the Porgera Joint Venture.
