National Mask Festival
The annual National Mask Festival showcases PNG's mask culture, attracting displays and performers from around the country, providing opportunities to see both common and rare masks. The three major genres of mask displayed are the ancestor, spirit, and tumbuan masks.
Ancestor masks represent humans, often with holes in the eyes. Small masks can be worn on the head during dances or ceremonies while others are mounted in homes to represent ancestors. Spirit masks represent non-human beings and are often designed to be mounted on walls to protect the house's occupants.
Tumbuans are also a type of spirit mask but are larger, worn over the head and shoulders, or whole body, during mime and dance performances illustrating goings-on in the spirit world. There's also food and crafts to enjoy at the festival.
