How many people are affected by malaria each year? Approximately 300 million people worldwide are affected by malaria and between 1 and 1.5 million people die from it every year.
There have been recent cases reported in Australia of blood donors returning to Australia from PNG after walking the Kokoda Track and many weeks later coming down with malaria. The tests carried out by the blood bank at the time of donation failed to show up the malaria. Fortunately the fresh blood components from the donors were recalled before transfusion. Current malarial screening tests performed at the time of donation fail to identify the problem.
