Proposed Airline Merger
Transport and Works Minister Don Polye has proposed the merger of the National Airline - Air Niugini, with Airlines PNG. Airlines PNG said a merger with Air Niugini was a possibility, but it rejected suggestions by government sources that its financial situation was precarious.
Any such merger would have a detrimental impact on Air Niugini's safety record, force it to pay higher insurance premiums and severely threaten its recent record of good profits. Air Niugini chief executive officer, Wasantha Kumarasiri, said a merger was not under consideration. Kumarasiri later said the merger proposal was the prerogative of the government as the shareholder to deal with it, and he did not want to comment.
