After a month in the wilderness of Tasmania Expedition Class is visiting PNG again arriving in Port Moresby on the 31st of October with the first in country destination supposed to be Tari. Vale Paul Igag
Well known PNG ornithologist, Paul Igag, has died. He was internationally recognised for his work in the Crater Mountain area of Eastern Highlands province. His work about the increasingly-rare birds of paradise has been featured on a BBC documentary hosted by international environmentalist David Attenborough.

Women Soldiers to SI
Two female soldiers are part of the 13th contingent of PNGDF soldiers that left Port Moresby yesterday for deployment as part of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Both are drivers with the force support battalion, Murray Barracks.

Lae Cancer Walk
Lae Golf Club lady members have raised K11,000 towards the cancer ward at Angau Hospital in Morobe province. Club captain Peter Boyd said a total 45 children and 30 adults walked the golf course to raise funds. The walk will become an annual event.
BSP Raises Fees
People using the services of Bank South Pacific to look after their money can expect increased fees for the service. In some case there will be fees were previously there were none. Some of the fees are - kundu savings account, K3 monthly fee would be charged for dormant accounts, teller service fee for deposit and teller service fee for EFTPos, while K4 would be charged for every withdrawal, automatic teller machine (ATM) services, 50 toea will be charged for ATM balance enquiry; 75 toea for ATM withdrawal, ATM phone top up and ATM funds transfer-withdraw. The bank will also charge K15 for ATM withdrawal using visa card and K1.50 for ATM balance enquiry for visa card.

PM Rejects Super Hospital
Sir Michal Somare has directed that no more public funds be used to pay for the Pacific Medical Centre project. He has directed Health Minister Sasa Zibe to redirect any funds committed to improving current public health services.

Drink Driving Campaign
South Pacific Brewery has injected K1 million to address drink driving problems in the country. Over the next two months a 30-second television drink-driving campaign infomercial will be aired on the local television station - EMTV.
A lottery, licenced by the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) and to be operated using mobile phones, has been condemned by many including women and church groups. Employers who provide mobile phones to employees are also concerned about the issue.
Hidden Valley finds opportunities for Morobe locals - Fiona Asok and Jason Lengeto are both employees at the Hidden Valley gold mining project in the Morobe province of Papua New Guinea. Hidden Valley is owned and run by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), in which Harmony has a 50% share. Both Fiona and Jason grew up in the local community.

Golden Chainsaw Award
Environmental lobby group Greenpeace has given the PNG government its Golden Chainsaw award for failing to protect the country's rainforests.
It also released a report arguing PNG should not be given money to save its forests under the United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation plan.
Previous recipients of the Golden Chainsaw include Malaysian and Brazilian logging companies.
Much of the logging in PNG is being carried out by Malaysian companies.
A letter in Nature from seven top scientists warns that PNG will lose all of its accessible forest in just ten to twenty years.

Senior Policeman Arrested
The former Superintendent of Operations in Port Moresby, Anderson Bawa, has been accused of being paid by telecommunications company Telikom PNG, for providing private escorts without the Police Commissioner's approval
Eda Ranu has said the cost of supplying water to the settlements and urban villages in Port Moresby costs the company K10 million annually. On average, Eda Ranu releases 145 million litres of water per day to the city of which 35 million litres goes to settlement areas.
Vale Paul Pora
Elder statesman, Paul Pora, has passed away at the age of 66. He is survived by his four wives and 17 children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hundreds flocked to Sioni Kami Memorial Church in Port Moresby to pay their last respects.
Newcrest Defends Ocean Disposal
Newcrest Mining has defended the 15-year-old practice of deep ocean disposal of tailings from the Lihir goldmine in New Ireland province at its annual meeting. Newcrest acquired the mine in a recent $9.5 billion takeover of Lihir Gold.
Barrick Gold Accused
The operator of Porgera Gold mine, Barrick Gold, has been implicated for its alleged involvement in "sustained and flagrant violation of environmental protection". The Montreal based Canadian online news The Gazette reported last Friday "heavy metal pollution, especially mercury build-up from Barrick's Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea, was an egregious case in point".

Hidden Valley Mine
One of the joint venture partners in the just-commissioned Hidden Valley gold mine, an open-pit, gold-silver mine and processing plant, in Morobe province has admitted that there are "higher-than-expected" sediment levels in the Watut River. The admission came about as Morobe Mining Joint Ventures, made up of Harmony and Australian partner Newcrest, started paying compensation to affected villagers along the Watut River and as Bulolo MP Sam Basil called on villagers not to accept the payouts.

Four Nation's Rugby League
New Zealand has beaten the PNG Kumuls 76-12 in Rotorua, New Zealand. The 14-try loss equalled PNG's record 64-0 loss to the Kiwis at the same venue in 1996. The best for the Kumuls were Aiton, Yere, Nixon Kolo and Michael Mark. The halftime score was 46-0.
