Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth about 31 - 33 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look -- http://maps.expedia.com/ -- and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

If a longer URL in this newsletter appears to be broken, please manually cut and then paste the link into your browser.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter, for most world currencies, can be located at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html. -- The daily rate for Kina from several banks in PNG can be found on the PNG Business Directory -- http://www.pngbd.com

PNG Parliament -- I don't think anyone could possibly keep track of who is who in a PNG government -- there is an attempt (below) but it will be out of date as soon as it is published knowing how PNG politics works.

----------

+ Prime Minister
The new Speaker of Parliament, Iairo Lasaro resigned after 24 hours in office so the new "new" Speaker is Bernard Narokobi. The Prime Minister as previously announced is Sir Mekere Morauta. The Deputy Prime Minister is John Pundari. He was the Speaker in the government of Bill Skate.

+ New Cabinet

The group that missed out on the top jobs is the group lead by John Pundari. Mr Pundari says he is happy with the selection but members of his party are quoted as being a little bit disgruntled.

+ Port Moresby
Port Moresby has been hit by a cold snap. It is almost like the wet season has begun early.

+ PNG Snooker
The 26th World Snooker Championships will be held in Port Moresby from November 7 to November 21. The venue will be the Port Moresby Travelodge and there is a web site already set up at -- http://www.snooker99.com

+ New Police Chief
Along with the change of Prime Minister there is also a change of the head of the Police Force. The New Commissioner is John Wakon who takes over from Peter Aigilo.

+ Taiwan Deal
The recently signed deal with Taiwan by the previous Skate Govt. will be reviewed by the new Govt. The deal was seen by many people as a quick way of raising funds and had little or no long term gain when compared with other long term aid programs.

+ Copyright Law
The copyright law is back in the news again. It is being resurrected by the National Cultural Commission in an effort to protect cultural and traditional properties.

+ Air Niugini
The fate of the Managing Director of Air Niugini is not known. Rumours have it that he was suspended. He is possibly back at work but he is proving to be an elusive character

+ PNG Gas Project
The PM is confident of the PNG Gas Project. Sir Mekere said financial negotiations for the project were well advanced.

Courtesy of a reader, Ruth Zimmerman here are a few sites that offer the PNG National Anthem as either a WAV or MID file so that you can crank up your sound equipment and arise to the sounds of the National Anthem.
